China International Import Expo

The China International Import Expo (CIIE) is the world's first import-themed national-level expo. As the biggest international trade fair devoted to promoting imports into China, the CIIE has shown the Chinese desire to foster complementary advantages with the outside world and seek balanced and mutually beneficial trade.

The China International Import Expo (CIIE) is the world’s first import-themed national-level expo. The annual expo’s sixth edition, which is held in Shanghai in November, is the visible evidence of China’s commitment to continuing opening up and ensuring that there are opportunities for other nations to share in China’s ongoing and sustained economic growth. The expo is a major decision made by China’s top leadership to promote a new round of high-level opening-up, and a key move of China to actively open its market wider to the rest of the world.

In the past five years, participating companies, from industry leaders listed in the Fortune Global 500 to small firms from underdeveloped countries, have all benefited greatly from the CIIE. Their stories with the CIIE are vivid examples of China pushing economic globalization toward being more open, inclusive, balanced and beneficial to all. The annual China International Import Expo is becoming a magnet for exhibitors to debut their new products and technologies, and it is a reflection of the Chinese market’s growing significance to the global economy. As the biggest international trade fair devoted to promoting imports into China, the CIIE has shown the Chinese desire to foster complementary advantages with the outside world and seek balanced and mutually beneficial trade.

The CIIE has quickly evolved over the last five years into a window showcasing China’s efforts in promoting its new dual-circulation development pattern. The dual-circulation development pattern focuses on the domestic economy while stressing a positive interplay between domestic and international economic flows. Although China is still moving up from a middle-income country, that does not mean it is seeking inexpensive, basic quality imports. Indeed, it is quite the opposite as China wants to encourage involvement in the CIIE from suppliers of high quality, innovative products that reflect the latest technological advances to complement China’s own production. Now China has entered a new development stage at which consumption keeps increasing, indicating enormous potential for the growth of consumption and import. In the next five years, China is expecting to import products and services valuing more than 10 trillion U.S. dollars, which provides a historic opportunity for enterprises across the world to enter the huge Chinese market.

The China International Import Expo, a key platform of China supporting its high-level opening-up efforts, is expected to continue to create huge business opportunities for participating foreign enterprises, big and small. It will help them tap China’s supersized market, besides injecting more positive energy into the global economic recovery that has been facing gloomy prospects. The CIIE not only brings together a vast array of global products and services but also serves as an ideal platform for in-depth dialogues and cooperation. The CIIE is not only bringing the best of innovation from the world to China, but also showcasing the best of innovation of the country to the world.

The Chinese government sincerely welcomes government officials, business communities, exhibitors and professional purchasers across the world to participate in CIIE and to explore the Chinese market. We would like to work with all countries, regions and international organizations to make CIIE a world-class Expo, providing new channels for countries and regions to do business, strengthen cooperation and promote common prosperity of the world economy and trade.

The 6th China International Import Expo sees record high tentative trade deals

The sixth China International Import Expo in Shanghai saw $78.41 billion in tentative deals for purchases of goods and services, setting a record high.

Sun Chenghai, deputy director-general of the CIIE Bureau, released the above statistics at a news conference on Friday, as the six-day exhibition wrapped up. This year's value of deals, which is the highest of all six editions of the CIIE so far, rose 6.7 percent from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, up to 442 new products, technologies and services made their debuts at this year's CIIE, Sun said. This outdid the record of 438 set last year.

This year's expo has set a record of 367,000 square meters of exhibition area. A total of 3,486 companies from 128 countries and regions participated in the CIIE. Up to 289 global Fortune 500 companies and industry leaders were present at the exhibition, also a record high.

A total of 11 countries were present at the CIIE for the first time this year, including Honduras, Zimbabwe and Bahrain.

The high quality of this year's CIIE makes for a positive contribution to global economic recovery and global prosperity, said Sun.

Zhang Xiong, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government, said at the news conference that representatives from 39 countries and regions showcased more than 300 innovative projects related to low-carbon green development, healthcare, digital economy and innovative technologies this year, overtaking the scale of similar demonstrations during previous editions of the CIIE.

While serving as an important platform to illustrate China's resolve to further open up its economy, this year's CIIE also played a larger role in nurturing innovation, Zhang said.

This is the sixth year in a row for multinational conglomerate Honeywell to participate in the annual CIIE. Yu Feng, the company's China president, said that the CIIE has helped to launch more of its products in China, expand its investment in the country and explore more cooperation.

China's rising economic growth momentum has boosted confidence among many foreign companies. Meanwhile, its massive market size, complete industrial system and welcoming environment for nurturing technological innovation are of great appeal to foreign firms, Yu said.

The presence of Canada Goose at this year's CIIE marked the extreme weather outerwear brand's participation at the expo for the second consecutive year. According to the company's chairman and CEO Dani Reiss, the CIIE is an ideal platform to build Canada Goose's long-term business in China. Its participation in the CIIE demonstrated its commitment to the Chinese market.

About 200 companies have signed up for the seventh CIIE to be held in November next year, with the total booked exhibition area exceeding 100,000 sq m, said Sun from the CIIE bureau.

French beauty conglomerate L'Oreal Group is one of them. According to the company's China CEO Fabrice Megarbane, it continues to expand its collaboration with government, industry associations and business partners via the CIIE, turning its positioning as an exhibitor into an investor. As a six-time participant, L'Oreal brought to the expo for the first time this year nearly 30 startups from China, France and Japan as part of its efforts to explore more innovation in the Chinese market.
