LED assembly​

High lumen output in automotive light bars is achieved through high-power ceramic-based or CSP (Chip Scale Package) LEDs. The light emitted by the LEDs is controlled by optics placed over each individual LED. Optics can take the form of reflectors, lenses, or hybrid systems combining both. It ensures that the LEDs receive a consistent and appropriate current despite fluctuations in the supply voltage. The LED driver used for LED light bars is typically a switching power supply. This switching power supply incorporates a DC-DC converter to adjust the current, ensuring that LEDs receive the proper power even when there are variations in the vehicle's electrical system or changes in junction temperatures. A boost–buck converter is often employed in LED drivers for applications where the load voltage may be higher or lower than the supply voltage. This type of converter can step up (boost) or step down (buck) the voltage as needed. Switching regulation compensates for voltage fluctuations and provides high circuit efficiency. However, the high-speed switching operation generates noise, leading to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Careful circuit board design, screening, and filtering are necessary to ensure that the LED driver complies with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations. EMI can adversely affect the operation of other circuit elements in the vicinity. Linear power supplies, which are free from EMI radiation, can be used when EMI requirements are particularly stringent. Linear regulation, however, only works when the LED load voltage is lower than the supply voltage. The DC-DC converter in the LED driver typically integrates various protection features, such as overvoltage, undervoltage, reverse polarity, overcurrent, short circuit, and overtemperature protection. These features enhance the longevity of both the LEDs and the LED driver by safeguarding against potential issues.
