The Norselight DM60 signalling lantern is designed to meet the stringent requirements of the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) and SOLAS regulations. According to these regulations, all ships over 150 tons gross tonnage on international voyages must have an efficient daylight signalling lamp that operates independently from the ship’s main electrical power source. This handheld lantern, measuring 127mm (5 inches), is suitable for all vessels and is used for ship-to-ship signalling via Morse Code. Constructed from lightweight, robust aluminum, the DM60 is fully waterproof and can also function as a spotlight when both the signalling trigger and lamp switch are engaged. It is approved by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), ensuring compliance with maritime safety standards.
Equipped with a 60W QT light source, the DM60 includes three spare lamps as part of the complete kit. It features a highly polished aluminum reflector with a safety front glass, delivering a signalling range of up to 8 nautical miles and a narrow beam divergence of 5 degrees. Red and green coloured filters come standard, allowing precise control of the light output, with additional filters available upon request. The lantern is fitted with tubular and V sights for accurate signalling, and a handle-mounted switch operates the unit. Signals are transmitted by triggering the tubular shutter system, which intermittently blocks the reflector’s light. The device has a semi-gloss black stoved enamel finish for durability.
The complete kit weighs 13 kg and includes the handheld lantern weighing 2.2 kg, a 5.8 kg battery pack, and a 4 kg polypropylene carrying case with custom foam inserts designed for maximum protection. The lantern connects via a 5.5-meter supply cable and is compatible with 115–230 V or 12/24 V power inputs. The intelligent switch mode battery charger supports dual inputs of 115 V and 230 V with charge rates optimized for 12V and 24V systems. Battery life allows for 80 minutes of continuous use on 12V and 115 minutes on 24V, with approximately 2 hours of operation in signalling mode.
The carrying case is constructed from durable polypropylene and includes bespoke foam inserts that protect the lantern and accessories during transport. The kit comes complete with a switch mode charger, battery, four lamps, and a set of red and green coloured filters, fulfilling MED and SOLAS requirements. Each lantern is supplied with three spare lamps and an approved portable battery pack to ensure readiness for maritime signalling.
The DM60 signalling lantern complies with a wide range of international standards, including the Marine Equipment Directive 2012/32/EU, SOLAS 74 as amended, IMO resolutions MSC.36(63), MSC.97(73), A.694(17), MSC.95(72), IEC 60945 (2002) with Corrigendum 1 (2008), and ISO 25861 (2007). These certifications affirm its reliability and safety for use on vessels operating under the most demanding maritime conditions.
