LED Navigation Lights for Large Vessels Over 20 Meters with Integrated Countdown System

Aqua Signal’s Series 61 navigation lights are designed specifically for vessels over 20 meters in length, with a strong focus on long product lifetime and safety. The family consists of two single-tier LED lanterns that feature a smart, tamper-proof countdown system, which alerts users when it’s time to replace the lanterns. Even when operating in ambient temperatures up to 45°C, these lights boast an impressive lifetime of 100,000 hours, making worries about lantern failure at sea redundant.

The Series 61 achieves such longevity through a sturdy design and the use of high-quality components. This includes an advanced LED driver technology and robust materials such as seawater-resistant aluminum, polycarbonate, and hardened tempered glass, which can withstand harsh weather conditions and temperature fluctuations. The LED light source and driver system have an estimated continuous runtime lifespan of 11 years when operated 24 hours a day at 45°C ambient temperature.

Safety is further enhanced by the integrated countdown system. This system is built into each lantern to prevent tampering and communicates the remaining service life to the vessel’s control panel. The countdown reflects the actual usage of the lantern, accounting for exposure to extreme cold or harsh conditions, thereby providing a reliable indicator for timely replacements and enhancing operational safety.

In addition to durability and safety, the Series 61 lanterns have low electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) emissions, meeting strict requirements for installations near VHF antennas. Tested in compliance with IEC 60945 standards, they ensure minimal interference and reliable operation in sensitive marine environments.

The Series 61 offers installation flexibility, compatible with Aqua Signal Navigation Light Control Panels and many third-party control panels (though compatibility must be confirmed with the control panel supplier). Installation is straightforward with only four bolts required to fasten the unit. The internal connection box provides ample space for wiring, and most variants can be installed upside down except for Port, Starboard, and Masthead lights due to COLREG visibility angle requirements. For vessels above 50 meters using Series 61, dual installations for Masthead, Starboard, Port, and Stern are necessary to comply with COLREG regulations.

The lightsource is LED, protected to IP66/IP67 standards, and operates effectively in ambient temperatures ranging from -25°C to +55°C. The cable gland is M25 x 1.5 polyamide, supporting cable diameters from 9.00 to 17.00 mm and cable runs up to 400 meters. The lantern dimensions are 154 mm by 190 mm by 180 mm, with a weight of 1.5 kg for the 24V version and 1.9 kg for the 115-230V version.

Series 61 is approved according to EN 14744, IEC 60945, COLREG 72, MSC.253(83), and other relevant maritime safety and performance standards. Voltage options include 115V/230V AC or 24V DC with frequencies of 50/60 Hz.

Quality testing includes shock resistance (up to 15g across 3 axes), vibration endurance (2.3g for 2 hours), climatic tolerance (-25°C to +55°C), salt mist spray resistance (level 6 for 1000 hours), EMC testing, and IP rating verification for dust and water ingress.

The lanterns feature a large junction box with easy terminal access and support cable cross-sections from 1.5 mm² to 2.5 mm², with a maximum cable length of 400 meters. The housing consists of polycarbonate for both the body and cover, with borosilicate glass for the lens and seawater-resistant aluminum for the top cover. Stainless steel screws and M6 hexagon nuts secure the structure.

The Series 61 is designed for vessels over 50 meters in length and carries certifications including the Wheelmark (MED Certificate), with UL and RMRS certifications pending. It comes with a 5-year warranty, reflecting Aqua Signal’s confidence in the product’s reliability and durability.
