Intended for installation above patient beds, it provides a combination of low-glare, soft lighting for the bedded area, the patient, and the surrounding bedroom or ward. Its dual-function optical design ensures that the direct light is minimized, promoting rest and recovery for patients while also providing sufficient illumination for healthcare professionals during examinations and observational checks. The uplight component is carefully angled to enhance ambient lighting, allowing patients, nurses, doctors, and other care staff to move safely around the room. Cavell’s twin drivers allow independent control of the up and downlight, which can be operated from both the patient’s bedside switch and the nursing station, ensuring flexibility and convenience for both patients and caregivers.
Healthcare lighting must balance functional requirements with patient comfort. Cavell addresses this by providing tailored illumination for the bed space and surrounding environment. For reading and personal tasks at the bedhead or pillow area, it delivers a minimum of 300 lux over a horizontal area of 1 m², accommodating various positions the patient may assume. During rest periods, the indirect lighting can be dimmed or turned off while the low-level downlight provides a gentle reading mode, allowing patients to use personal devices or read without disturbing others. For continuous observation, the luminaire provides 15–20 lux at the bedhead position, ensuring that patient monitoring can be conducted effectively without compromising comfort.
The luminaire delivers uniform, low-glare illumination across different bed layouts. Its optical design ensures that patients in opposite beds are not disturbed, while the uplight reflects off the ceiling to enhance the ambient environment of the room. Durability is key in healthcare settings, and the powder-coated steel body protects the luminaire against scratches and wear that can occur with daily use, maintaining a clean and professional appearance. Cavell is also engineered for hygiene, featuring seamless steel housing and two opal diffuser panels with no exposed screws, gaps, or crevices. This facilitates cleaning, prevents dirt and germs from accumulating, and supports stringent infection control procedures. A foam gasket on the reverse enables a flush fit to the wall, preventing dust and dirt from being trapped behind the luminaire.
Installation has been carefully considered to support efficiency and safety. Cavell features a lightweight backplate that is secured to the wall first, with the main body attaching via dog-clips to prevent accidental drops during assembly or maintenance. A 5-pin plug-and-play terminal allows easy wiring for both up and downlights, while fixing screws are located at the bottom and covered with plastic caps to maintain a clean, wipeable surface. The recommended mounting height is 1800 mm for ceilings between 2.4 m and 2.7 m, and the installation process involves securing the backplate, connecting the light engine with quick-fix connectors, and then locking it into place with the safety clip and screws.
Cavell combines high performance with patient-centric design. It delivers a total output of 6600 lumens, with a 30/70% split between direct and indirect light, meeting the LG2: Lighting for Healthcare premises (2019) standard for ward lighting. The luminaire features smooth radiused surfaces to reduce bacteria traps, an opal acrylic diffuser with optical film for controlled light distribution and reduced glare, and a curved internal reflector that enhances low-glare direct illumination. Both direct and indirect light are independently dimmable and controllable via DALI or SwitchDIM using two Tridonic one4all drivers, offering versatile lighting scenarios tailored to patient and caregiver needs. Cavell provides excellent visual comfort with CRI 80, a MacAdam 3 tolerance, L80 lifetime of 50,000 hours at 25 °C, and an IP40 ingress protection rating, ensuring reliability and longevity in demanding healthcare environments.
