Thorn’s Contrast range is a distinctive and elegant series of architectural luminaires designed to complement modern architecture and urban environments. The family is unified by a consistent, long-lasting design featuring a monochrome black front face that evokes the precision and quality of powerful optical instruments. From compact 4-LED spotlights to powerful 52-LED floodlights, Contrast provides exceptional versatility in lighting performance, offering a broad selection of colour temperatures from very warm 2200K to 4000K, as well as balanced white and RGBW options, enabling designers to achieve the perfect colour output for any application.
Control and adaptability are at the core of the Contrast range. White luminaires can be managed via DALI2, while RGBW models support RDMX. Manual dimming is possible using a discreet push button, or installations can be managed wirelessly via Bluetooth from a smartphone. The compact 4-LED mini Contrast includes an integrated driver and a single lens, delivering excellent colour mixing and a uniform output in a highly compact form factor. Larger models, from 12 LEDs to 52 LEDs, allow a wide variety of beam angles, from narrow to ultra-wide, as well as elliptical and asymmetrical beams. Optical accessories such as rotatable film diffusers, honeycombs, louvres, and visors can be added on site to further tailor light distribution and visual effect.
Construction of the Contrast luminaires emphasizes durability and suitability for outdoor and coastal environments. The body is crafted from die-cast aluminium (EN AC-44300) with a standard C5 corrosion resistance rating, while tempered 5mm glass and EPDM gaskets ensure robust protection against environmental elements. Textured powder-coated finishes in anthracite grey, light grey, black, or white are standard, with other RAL colours available on request. Geomet-coated screws and breather systems enhance longevity, and the design ensures no LED module replacement is required. The 4-LED model includes an integrated driver prewired with a 2-metre cable, while larger luminaires feature integrated drivers with multiple cable glands, depending on whether they are used for white, balanced white, or RGBW lighting. For RGBW or DALI/Bluetooth applications, a remote gearbox is ordered separately, allowing loop-in/loop-out cable connections.
Contrast’s optical design and performance are exceptional. Specially engineered optics provide high intensity for narrow spot lighting or accent applications, delivering up to 17,440 lumens while achieving efficacy of up to 100 lm/W. The multichip LED technology, paired with single-lens design on smaller luminaires, ensures homogeneous colour mixing without multi-shadow effects. Designers can choose from a range of beams, including circular beams from 8° to 60°, as well as elliptical and asymmetrical beams. Film diffusers and other optical accessories allow further refinement of light distribution, enhancing uniformity while minimizing glare and light loss. Balanced White technology provides tunable colour temperatures from 2200K to 4000K, allowing lighting schemes to adapt dynamically to time of day, environment, or design intent.
Installation flexibility is another key feature of the Contrast series. The 4-LED and 12-LED luminaires include a rotatable foot for 360° horizontal adjustment, while the 36-LED and 52-LED models feature a stirrup for stable mounting. Vertical tilting is supported from -70° to +80°. Medium and large Contrast luminaires can be mounted on poles using dedicated interfaces compatible with mast diameters of 60 to 100mm, supporting pole heights from 6m to 12m for accent or area lighting. Accessories such as rotatable film diffusers can be precisely positioned on the front ring to shape the beam, while louvers, visors, and honeycomb attachments allow further control over glare and spill.
Overall, the Contrast series provides a unified, high-performance lighting solution suitable for a wide range of applications, from precise accent and spotlighting to large-area floodlighting. Its combination of elegant design, robust construction, flexible control options, and versatile mounting and optical accessories makes it an ideal choice for architectural projects where visual impact, adaptability, and high-quality illumination are paramount. Whether illuminating façades, urban spaces, or specific architectural features, Contrast delivers seamless, professional-grade lighting performance with unmistakable aesthetic appeal.
