Today’s office spaces are constantly evolving. ARTELEA, Zumtobel’s new plug-and-play free-standing luminaire, is keeping pace with this trend by bringing the first Zumtobel product to receive the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard Version 4.0 certification with its focus on sustainability and circularity. In addition to the lumen output and design, ARTELEA also helps to bring the dynamics of daylight indoors.

Dornbirn, Austria – The Zumtobel lighting brand received its first Bronze Cradle to Cradle Certified® certification for the new free-standing luminaire ARTELEA. The product's certification by the Cradle to Cradle Product Innovations Institute (C2CPII) represents a milestone that further strengthens the Zumtobel Group's goal of establishing a Circular Economy at both a corporate and product level. The free-standing luminaire was certified according to the latest 4.0 version of the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard.

The Zumtobel brand has developed a luminaire that has been designed for a sustainable future from the very beginning of product development. This approach has paid off, as the ARTELEA is one of the first Cradle to Cradle Certified® luminaires. Designing a product consisting of metal, steel and electronics in such a way that is in line with the Cradle to Cradle principle and is therefore made to be as environmentally friendly as possible is no simple task. This makes us all the more pleased to receive the bronze certification, as well as to have gained numerous new insights.

Sebastian Gann, Sustainability Director of the Zumtobel Group

A luminaire for the future
The free-standing luminaire ARTELEA is characterised, among other things, by its modular design, as this allows flexibility. Flexibility that is essential for a future-proof lighting solution in the age of New Work. Easily mounted and expandable, attached to tables or as a free-standing luminaire, the ARTELEA brings seamlessly dimmable light into any room – a luminaire that adapts.

This modularity is not only limited to the versatility of the product, but also to the re-use options: simple maintenance, modernisation or replacement of the luminaire head. This ensures that the ARTELEA's lifetime does not end after its first use, but that the luminaire can be reintroduced into a cycle. By reusing the free-standing luminaire instead of buying a new one, up to 72.4 kg of CO2 can be saved. Utilising materials of a up to 80% recycling rate and a product life of around 48 years, with a regular use of 40 hours per week, make the ARTELEA a luminaire for the future.

Receiving the Bronze Cradle to Cradle Certified® certification for our ARTELEA has been immensely rewarding. The meticulous analysis of this luminaire brought insights that have significant influence on our product development. Not only were we able to further refine our Circular Design Rules, but also existing products will be optimised with this newly gained knowledge. This takes us another step closer to our goal of developing products in the sense of a Circular Economy.

A rulebook for circularity
The focus on the three aspects of materials, design and systems is the result of the Circular Design Rules (CDRs) which were implemented as part of the Zumtobel Group's sustainability strategy, in particular the goal of establishing a Circular Economy. Every newly developed product is designed in accordance with this internal tool, which allows the principle of the Circular Economy to be implemented at a product level. With the CDRs, the various life phases of a product are considered right from the start of development. This ensures that the product – whether through refurbishment, remanufacturing or recycling – can be reintroduced into a cycle.
