Lumileds announced the release of its LUXEON HL4X power LED that delivers the lighting industry’s highest output and efficacy; it furthers the ability for lighting manufacturers to standardize their designs around a common footprint and proves that meaningful LED efficacy gains are still possible. LUXEON HL4X is designed specifically for outdoor and industrial applications such as stadium lights, streetlights, and high bay luminaires, as well as torches and rugged portable devices where the high lumen density, efficacy, robustness, and quality of light are critical. The high-power domed package delivers very high output, excellent efficacy, color stability, and longevity regardless of the application or environment.

With typical output of 680lm at 700mA and typical efficacy exceeding 168 lm/W from its 4mm2 die, LUXEON HL4X offers manufacturers a simple, seamless upgrade for virtually any existing application using a similar 3535 package. Engineers managed the optical design so that existing optics for other 3535 solutions work with the new LED.

LUXEON HL4X at a Glance
  • Industry standard 3535 package with a 3-stripe footprint
  • CCT options of 3000K, 4000K, 5000K, 5700K, and 6500K

  • Unique dome design is optimized to maximize light output within ±130°
  • Large thermal pad allows high drive currents and close-packed LEDs
“The features of LUXEON HL4X make it ideal for high-lumen applications such as industrial and stadium lighting,” said Noman Rangwala, Head of Product Marketing and Management (L1) at Lumileds, “However, the optical compatibility with many existing 3535 optics makes it possible to replace lower-performing LEDs directly and improve system efficiency by 10 lm/W or more. This will be a game changer.”

Suresnes, France – With ten new versatile and rechargeable[1] LED work lights, Lumileds brings affordable, handy, and robust LED illumination to any task in workshops or garages. The new Philips Xperion 3000 LED work lights help workers see almost anywhere they need while offering durability, flexibility, and battery. They are perfect for quick inspection jobs and everyday use.

Bright, comfortable work lights

Our brand-new Philips Xperion 3000 work lights feature a dual-mode, cool white LED light. The Boost mode delivers up to 1,000 lumens in work lights like the Xperion 3000 Flood light. If less light and longer battery life are needed, simply switch to Eco mode which provides a beam of up to 600 lumens depending on the work light. Some of the work lights in the range are also equipped with a spotlight to focus on specific areas. The Philips Xperion 3000 work lights offer a color temperature of 6000 Kelvin. Their bright, eye-friendly light suits daily use and doesn’t cause eye fatigue. Pivoting light modules[2] direct the light exactly where needed. We also designed our lights so that the primary illumination angle is from 40° to 130°.

Versatile for hands-free use and easy to operate

Workers often need both hands when working on a task. The Philips Xperion 3000 range features in-built magnets -and magnetic handles for the two portable flood lights- so they can easily mount any light on any nearby metal surface, such as under a sink or the bonnet of a car.

Most of our lights have rotatable, retractable hooks. The Xperion 3000 Penlight and Pen eco feature a clip always to have bright light to hand.

“Philips Xperion 3000 work light range has been designed for everyday use,” said Pascal Charvat, EMEA Product Manager for Work Lights at Lumileds. “Workers also benefit from Philips quality for durable and powerful tools.”

Once fully charged, our Philips Xperion 3000 range delivers a bright white light from its main beam for up to 6.5 hours in Boost mode. If the Eco mode is enabled, the battery will last up to ten hours. So, with occasional use, the work lights can operate for several days before recharging.

Qualitative design at an attractive price

We’ve made our Philips Xperion 3000 work lights tough enough for indoor and outdoor use. Workshop life has its fair share of bumps and scrapes. Tools get dropped, liquids spill, and overflow, so our tools must be durable to survive. This new range comes with internationally recognized impact and ingress protection. Philips Xperion 3000 work lights are IK06 to IK08-rated to withstand shocks.

For peace of mind, our work lights feature Philips a two-year warranty. The Philips Xperion 3000 LED range includes ten work lights so workers can pick the right light for every task.

Blue light content is a critical factor in assessing the harm from night-time illumination. Blue light scatters more than other wavelengths which increases light pollution and glare, and it has significant impacts on the circadian rhythms and behaviors of humans, plants, and wildlife. This is why it is a particular focus of attention.

Though LEDs are often quickly – and incorrectly – identified as ‘the problem’, LEDs with correlated color temperatures of approximately 2200K – 2700K have similar levels of blue light content compared to HPS or incadescent lamps – 6-7%.

NightScape Technology is the first white light to significantly reduce the percent of blue content between 400nm and 500nm to less than 2%. Though thoughtful luminaire design, control technologies, and lighting designs that don’t ‘over-illuminate’ are necessary, it is now possible, thanks to advances in LED technology, to start with the right light for night-time illumination.

With ultra-low levels of blue light, Lumileds LEDs with NightScape Technology make it possible to meet new outdoor lighting standards – like those in Maui – without redesigning optics or fixtures

San Jose, CA – Lumileds NightScape Technology has been engineered to preserve the well-being of animals, plants, and people, reduce glare and light pollution, and support dark sky initiatives. Virtually all outdoor solutions, from landscape lighting to area lighting, will be better for the environment with the application of NightScape Technology with blue light content at levels below 2%.

Scientific studies have shown that high levels of blue light content disrupts the human circadian rhythm at night and adversely affects wildlife, such as birds, insects, and turtles. Across the globe blue light content contributes to the brightening of the night sky.

“It is within our innovation and engineering capabilities to solve real problems with LED technology and improve the lit environment,” said Willem Sillevis-Smitt, Lumileds Sr. Director of Business Development. “Too often our collective behavior is to ask how we can adjust our lighting solutions to the LEDs available. What we did instead was ask how we can address this real-world lighting problem. In this case, the potential negative impacts of blue light content are compelling. We challenged our engineers and scientists to create high-quality white light with lower blue content that could improve the night-time environment for everyone and everything.”

NightScape Technology will first be available in Lumileds LUXEON 3030 HE Plus and 5050 Square LEDs with a CCT of 1900K and blue light content of just 1.8% in the 400-500 nanometer range of the visible light spectrum. These outdoor proven emitters are widely used around the world for outdoor lighting including streetlights, pedestrian, landscape, and similar applications.

Lumileds-w-NightScapeTech.jpg

The physical dimensions and optical radiation patterns of the LUXEON 3030 HE Plus and LUXEON 5050 Square LEDs are identical to the existing parts in each portfolio. Any luminaire using either of these products or potentially from other manufacturers can quickly and easily adopt NightScape technology and produce a more environmentally friendly solution.

Wildlife, such as birds, turtles, and even insects, are susceptible to the impacts of artificial light at night on their migration, mating, and nocturnal activities. Outdoor lighting regulations are being rewritten and updated to provide some wildlife protection. Maui County in Hawaii has a new ordinance that took effect on July 1, 2023. This ordinance requires that “All outdoor lighting fixtures, except for neon, must limit short wavelength content to no more than 2 percent of blue light content.” Outdoor fixtures using LEDs with Lumileds NightScape technology will easily fall below the 2% requirement.

“With NightScape Technology, Lumileds is the first to launch a light source that is dedicated to addressing light pollution while still offering functional, long-lasting, and efficient illumination.”

— Willem Sillevis-Smitt

Options42PercentBlue-2048x906.jpg

“I believe that NightScape technology is the first light source to purposely address the problem of light pollution and at the same time deliver good quality, functional lighting,” said Willem Sillevis-Smitt, “It’s critical that the lighting industry proactively address the impact of outdoor lighting on the environment. We’re excited to make it possible for luminaire manufacturers to reduce the impact on wildlife and dark skies.”

The amount of blue light emitted by various light sources is often misunderstood. It is typically measured as the ratio of blue light between 400 and 500 nanometers to the total amount of visible light emitted from the source. The graph below shows blue light levels for different light sources that are commonly used at night. Incandescent bulbs are more commonly used in residential settings while HPS is used more commercially.
