Lamp” is a generic term for a man-made light source created for receiving electrical power and for generating optical radiation. Lamps are designed and constructed according to universal standards established for bases, sizes and shapes, allowing for the substitution of lamps by other manufacturers. Examples of lamps include bulbs and tubes. The term "lamp" is tied in with legacy lighting technologies such as incandescent, fluorescent, and high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting. LED lamps, to a large extent, are created as a retrofit solution for replace inefficient lamps in existing light fixtures. Even LED lamps are being phased out of the market. Modern lighting systems integrate LEDs, rather than LED bulbs or tubes, into light fixtures. The direct integration of LEDs significantly facilitates optical control, thermal management, electrical engineering, and luminaire design.

In a nutshell, a lamp is a light bulb or light tube. It's not a light fixture (luminaire). However, there is an exception. A portable luminaire consisting of a lamp with shade, reflector, housing, power supply, stand, switch, or other accessories is also called a "lamp", e.g. "table lamp", "desk lamp", and "floor lamp".
