Solar-Powered and AC-Compatible Stand-Alone Steady Burning Approach Light for Temporary and Permanent Runway Lighting

The AV-SSBL (Stand-alone Steady Burning Light) is a versatile, self-contained approach lighting solution designed for both permanent and temporary airfield installations. It is available in two chassis options to accommodate diverse operational needs: one version features a composite polymer chassis with integrated solar panels and a battery backup system, while the other utilizes a rugged aluminum chassis equipped with an internal, user-replaceable battery. These configurations allow the AV-SSBL to be deployed in a variety of environments and power setups, offering flexible AC or solar-powered operation. It can also be equipped with battery backup to ensure continued performance during power interruptions.

This light is ideal for expeditionary, tactical, temporary, or semi-permanent applications and can be configured for infrared (IR) or night vision goggle (NVG) modes to support covert military operations. Depending on the mission or installation requirements, the AV-SSBL can be powered by direct current from solar panels, alternating current with battery backup, or a combination of both for maximum reliability. The system is compatible with standard approach lighting system configurations including MALSR (Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights), SSEALS (Simplified Short Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights), and SALS (Short Approach Lighting System). Specifically, MALSR includes 6 steady burning barrettes, 15 stand-alone steady burning lights, and 5 sequenced flashing lights; SSEALS includes 7 steady burning lights and 3 sequenced flashing lights; while SALS incorporates 17 stand-alone steady burning lights.

Performance-wise, the AV-SSBL uses energy-efficient LED technology available in white light, with three or five-step intensity adjustments to meet varying visibility conditions. It provides up to 4 hours of continuous operation at maximum intensity and boasts an LED life expectancy of over 100,000 hours. Electrical operation is protected by integrated circuit protection and functions over a wide voltage input range from 90 to 264 VAC at 50/60 Hz. The unit is engineered for harsh conditions, with an operational temperature range from -40 to 122°F (-40 to 55°C), and is rated to withstand wind speeds up to 300 mph (483 kph), ensuring reliable operation in extreme environments.

The integrated solar version features a 20-watt monocrystalline solar module (comprised of four 5-watt panels) and utilizes Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) for efficient solar charging. The battery system can be easily expanded with solar components to prolong operational life and reduce maintenance. The AV-SSBL is certified to FAA-E-2980 photometric standards and manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 quality assurance protocols. It is part of the trusted AVLITE® and AV-HMALS® product lines, registered trademarks of Avlite Systems.
