The MD3-4200 recessed linear medical ambient, exam, and reading light provides a simple yet comprehensive lighting solution tailored for healthcare environments, including hospitals and patient rooms. Designed for use in pairs, the fixtures deliver both exam and ambient light outputs, offering precise and comfortable illumination for patient care. In addition, a third lighting component is integrated into the design — small, diffuse apertures positioned perfectly for focused reading tasks. This combination of lighting modes ensures optimal visibility and comfort for both patients and healthcare professionals.
To simplify installation and operation, the MD3-4200 can be equipped with an integrated low-voltage controller located within the primary fixture. This allows direct control of a satellite fixture, reducing wiring complexity and enabling connection to building and bed control systems through a single interface. Optional amber or white night lights provide low-level illumination for nighttime activities, allowing staff to perform necessary tasks without disturbing patients’ rest.
Constructed from 20-gauge precision-formed cold rolled steel, the fixture housing features welded seams and integral flanges for secure grid installation. The door frame, also made of 20-gauge steel with welded corners, is hinged to the housing using stainless steel safety cable tethers. Flush Phillips head countersunk stainless steel screws secure the frame, with optional color-matched white screws available. The lens, a 0.080-inch thick translucent diffuse white acrylic, is securely sealed to the inner surface of the door to ensure durability and maintain a clean aesthetic. Alternative lens materials such as polycarbonate can also be specified.
The MD3-4200 incorporates three distinct optical systems. The ambient mode uses a symmetric distribution from a centered LED array to provide uniform light across the room. The exam mode employs a die-formed reflector and LED arrangement to generate left and right asymmetric distributions that deliver precise vertical illumination without glare. The reading mode utilizes a COB LED array with a 50mm elliptical reflector and a shielded diffuser positioned at the head end of the doorframe. Each of these systems is controlled by independent dimmable drivers, giving medical staff flexibility to adjust light levels based on task and environment.
The fixture’s LED modules are engineered for consistent performance, maintaining high CRI values and color stability across all modes. Available in standard color temperatures of 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K, with a 3 SDCM color consistency and standard 80+ CRI (optional 90+ CRI), the MD3-4200 ensures natural color rendering and visual comfort. For more advanced lighting control, Tunable White options provide a CCT range from 2700K to 6500K, while BIOS® SkyBlue® technology supports circadian lighting benefits. The LED boards are field replaceable and designed for a long lifetime exceeding 60,000 hours (L70).
The electronic driver is constant current, programmable, and dimmable to 1% using a 0–10V control protocol. It operates with high efficiency (>85%) and low total harmonic distortion (<10%), certified to FCC Part 15, Class A standards. Compatible voltage inputs include 120–277Vac or 347Vac at 50/60Hz. Optional control systems such as Lutron™ or DALI drivers are available, as well as a low-voltage controller option for pillow switch operation (pillow switch by others).
A matte architectural white polyester powder coat finish with a five-stage pretreatment ensures long-lasting durability and a clean, professional appearance. An anti-microbial matte white finish is also available for environments requiring enhanced infection control. Internal reflectors are coated in high-reflectance white polyester for maximum light output efficiency.
For mounting, the fixture includes integral T-grid clips with seismic support holes for secure attachment to the building structure. Optional yoke brackets are available for flanged or drywall ceiling installations. The MD3-4200 carries ETL Damp Location certification, with optional IP65 construction for added protection in demanding healthcare environments.
By combining multiple light modes in a single recessed unit—ambient, exam, and reading—the MD3-4200 delivers exceptional functionality and visual comfort in patient-centered spaces. Its robust construction, flexible control options, and thoughtful design make it an ideal choice for modern healthcare lighting applications focused on performance, comfort, and ease of integration.
