Portable Runway Obstruction Light for Temporary and Emergency Airfield Lighting Solutions

The S4GA portable runway obstruction light provides a dependable and versatile solution for temporary and emergency airfield lighting, specifically engineered for rapid deployment and reliable operation in all weather conditions. This mobile obstruction aviation light is designed primarily for obstacle marking at airports and helipads, meeting the ICAO low-intensity obstacle light requirements for type A. Its functionality includes portable obstruction lighting, temporary barricade and caution lights, and hazard marking to ensure aviation safety in critical environments.

This elevated airfield light emits a steady red, omnidirectional beam, powered by a battery and remotely controlled for ease of operation. Key features of the S4GA portable obstruction light include rapid deployment capability, long operating time, radio control for wireless management, and robust weather resistance to maintain performance under harsh environmental conditions.

The optics system produces a red light with a luminous intensity of 37 candela, verified by an accredited laboratory. It uses omnidirectional LED technology with an impressive lifespan of 100,000 hours and consumes a maximum power of only 0.6 watts. Additionally, the light is compatible with Night Vision Goggles (NVG) thanks to optional infrared LEDs. The LED module is user-replaceable, ensuring ease of maintenance.

The portable obstruction light offers several battery options to suit different operational needs. The standard lead-acid battery configuration includes two built-in, user-replaceable, and air-transportable deep-cycle VRLA batteries with a total capacity of 216 Wh, providing autonomy up to 432 hours at 30% intensity. This setup is designed for about 1,200 charging cycles, equating to roughly 4-5 years of service life. For extended operation, a lithium-ion battery option is available with a total capacity of 408 Wh and autonomy of 816 hours at 30% intensity, designed for 3,000 cycles or 6-7 years of life. Another choice is the lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, delivering 288 Wh capacity with 576 hours autonomy and a 3,000-cycle lifespan. For extreme cold conditions, the Lead Acid Cyclon battery (Arctic Pack) provides 120 Wh capacity with 240 hours autonomy and a longer lifespan of 10-15 years.

Charging options for the SP-102 portable runway obstruction light are flexible and efficient. Standard charging occurs via the OCT-401 charger or through drop-in charging within a trailer, both requiring approximately eight hours to fully recharge the batteries. Additionally, solar panel charging is available for off-grid applications, allowing for extended autonomy in remote locations.

The control and monitoring system uses a wireless mesh network, operating primarily at 868 MHz with optional frequencies of 915 MHz or 2.4 GHz, providing a wireless range exceeding 10 kilometers when relayed. The light supports multiple operating modes including steady, flashing, dusk-to-dawn, and optional visible or infrared modes. Activation can be achieved through a handheld UR-101 controller, a UR-201 control and monitoring unit, or via computer interface using the ALCMS system, facilitating comprehensive and flexible management.

Safety and reliability are priorities for this lighting system. It incorporates five levels of protection against system failure, including a secondary backup power supply to ensure continuous operation. Real-time monitoring is available through the Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ALCMS), and an emergency ON/OFF button provides immediate manual control if necessary.

The casing and components are built for durability and ease of use. The light dome is made from borosilicate hardened glass with UV resistance, while the casing uses UV-stabilized Lexan polycarbonate in aviation yellow for high visibility. Mounting options include frangible mounts for asphalt or concrete surfaces and rubber pads for varied surfaces, with quick-release and permanent mounting options available. Additional design features include a charging port (with single, dual, or drop-in options), detachable antenna, pressure-stabilizing valve, transportation fuse, battery level indicator, and an aluminum carrying handle. The casing is rated for a lifespan of 15 years, and the unit’s dimensions are compact at 244 mm by 185 mm by 297 mm.

The device is designed to operate reliably in harsh environmental conditions, functioning within a temperature range of -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F) with an optional Arctic Pack that extends this range from -40°C to 80°C (-40°F to 176°F). It carries an IP68 ingress protection rating and an IK10 impact resistance rating, both tested by accredited laboratories, ensuring resilience against water immersion and mechanical impacts.

Compliance with international standards is thoroughly addressed. The light meets photometric and chromaticity requirements outlined in ICAO Annex 14th, Volume I, 9th Edition (July 2022). It also complies with secondary power supply standards per ICAO Annex 14th, Volume I, 7th Edition (July 2016). Additionally, the product holds CE certification under the 2014/53/EU Radio Equipment Directive and adheres to the 2011/65/EU RoHS Directive.

The SP-102 portable runway obstruction light consists of carefully engineered components including an adapter for the glass dome, carrying handle, O-rings for sealing, borosilicate glass dome, LED optics, radio antenna for wireless control, LED printed circuit board, upper and bottom parts of the casing, charging port, main printed circuit board, protective plates, rubber gasket, battery holder with two built-in batteries, pressure-stabilizing valve, transportation fuse, and an emergency ON/OFF button, all contributing to the light’s performance, durability, and ease of use in demanding airfield applications.
