Portable Battery Powered LED Helipad Lighting System for Temporary and Ad-Hoc Helicopter Landing Zones

FEC Heliports’ Portable Battery Powered LED Helipad Lighting System—marketed under the HEMS-Star® brand—is recognized as one of the most advanced and reliable temporary lighting solutions available for helicopter landing zones. Specifically engineered for rapid deployment in emergency and temporary operations, the system ensures safe, effective marking of designated or ad-hoc landing sites under a wide range of environmental conditions. Its versatility, durability, and cutting-edge wireless control make it the go-to choice for military, humanitarian, and emergency response operations worldwide.

The HEMS-Star® model (HP0678) is a rechargeable battery-powered LED helipad lighting unit designed for fast, efficient setup in any location. This portable lighting system is currently used by prominent global organizations such as the United Nations, with active deployments in peacekeeping operations like those in Mali. It also serves numerous emergency services and military branches, including the Scottish Ambulance Service, Midland and Welsh Air Ambulances, North West Air Ambulance, the Philippine Navy, the Mexican Navy, and various local EMS providers. Its proven field performance spans multiple continents, including deployments in the UK, USA, Russia, Bangladesh, Kenya, Mozambique, The Philippines, Mexico, and Japan.

Each HEMS-Star® unit incorporates visible red, blue, green, and white LEDs, along with infrared output, all of which are NVG (night vision goggle) compatible. The units can be programmed to operate in multiple modes—steady-on, flashing, location beacon, or even Morse code—with the option of automatic activation via an integrated photo eye for sunset/sunrise switching. Every light is equipped with a built-in UHF transceiver, allowing full wireless control, monitoring, and programming. Operators can manage individual lights or coordinated groups using either a handheld remote lighting controller or a PC/tablet via the provided Zulu USB transceiver dongle.

The system’s design prioritizes portability and ruggedness. Each light weighs less than 2.2 pounds (1 kg), and a complete case—including up to 8 lights—has a total weight of only 23.4 pounds (10.6 kg), making it highly transportable and suitable for air or ground deployment. Despite its light weight, the HEMS-Star® system is built for stability and has undergone successful rotor wash testing at the Sikorsky Development Flight Centre under the powerful downdraft of a CH-147 Chinook helicopter.

The lights are housed in an IP65-rated enclosure with a stainless steel base for added durability and resistance to weather and harsh environments. Rechargeability is another major advantage—each light can be charged within its carrying case from mains power (100–240V AC), vehicle power (13.5–28V DC), or even alternative energy sources like solar or wind. The system offers an operational run time of up to 18 hours on steady mode and recharges fully in approximately 3.5 hours.

With both FCC and CE certifications, the HEMS-Star® system meets operational standards for use across the United States and European Union. Its robust feature set, flexible deployment capabilities, and global track record make it a trusted solution for mission-critical helipad lighting in the most challenging operational environments.
