Pedestrian Area Light with Heritage-Inspired Acorn Design for Urban and Suburban Applications

The Northport Area Light is a modern tribute to the iconic acorn streetlamp, a design deeply embedded in American streetscape heritage. Instead of a traditional glass globe, the distinctive acorn shape subtly appears in the negative space between the arms at the top of each luminaire. This elegant reinterpretation merges advanced LED technology and optics with nostalgic design elements, such as an optional LED element inside the fixture that recalls the warm glow of gas lamps and early filament bulbs, strengthening the sense of place and tradition.

Designed for applications up to 16 feet, the Northport Area Light is available in multiple mounting configurations including single and double pole mounts as well as pendant arm mounts. The collection provides both pedestrian-centric and roadway lighting options, all crafted with a modern, efficient, and dark-sky compliant design. Its clear or diffused lenses come with multiple output and distribution choices to deliver pleasing, low-glare illumination tailored for a variety of outdoor environments.

The Northport collection is divided into two series that address different lighting needs. The 200 series features Landscape Forms’ premier visual comfort light engine, widely recognized as an industry benchmark for pedestrian-friendly spaces. This series focuses on placemaking, safety, and user comfort, employing human-centric optical design to reduce high-angle glare, minimize contrast ratios, and eliminate visible LED “lens image.” Meanwhile, the 300 series targets broader applications such as parking lots, streetscapes, and transit areas. It offers selectable lumen packages exceeding 8,000 lumens, various distribution types, and lens options to meet stringent footcandle and uniformity requirements at taller pole heights and wider spacing.

Constructed from durable cast aluminum, the Northport Area Light’s housing and pole components are designed for longevity and resilience. All hardware is magni-coated steel, providing optimum corrosion resistance and anti-seize protection. The fixture is IP66 rated, surge protected, and supports 0-10V dimming with a robust electronic driver capable of starting at temperatures as low as -40°C. Optional features include ANSI C136.41 twist-lock receptacles and pole-mounted photo or motion sensors. The luminaire ships prewired, with a separate circuit dedicated to the center LED element for enhanced functionality.

The LED cartridge is factory sealed, vented, and easily replaceable, featuring a UV-stable, impact-resistant acrylic lens for protection and clarity. High-powered LEDs mounted on RoHS-compliant circuit boards are paired with PMMA optics to ensure precise light control. Available color temperatures range from 2700K to 4000K, all delivering a color rendering index above 80 for natural and vibrant illumination. The luminaires meet or exceed TM21 L70 standards with an expected lifespan exceeding 60,000 hours.

Poles and base covers are made from seamless aluminum alloy with flush-mounted hand hole covers and cast aluminum base plates. Decorative base covers and nut covers enhance the aesthetics, while anchor bolts conform to ASTM standards for secure installation. Poles are designed to accommodate arm-mounted configurations with a standard 5-inch diameter and feature a flush top with pole cap. The single post-top poles include a standard tenon for easy fixture attachment.

Finishing touches include a durable Pangard II® polyester powdercoat that resists rust, chipping, peeling, and fading, available in a broad palette of standard and custom colors. This finish ensures long-lasting beauty and protection even in demanding outdoor conditions.

Created in collaboration with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, a leading authority in Modern Traditional design, the Northport collection spans a broad range of site furnishings including benches, litters, planters, bike racks, bollards, and lighting. It represents a modern reinterpretation of the traditional American design lexicon, drawing on historic influences while embracing innovative materials and technologies. The result is a cohesive and elegant streetscape solution that bridges traditional and contemporary architecture, complementing other Landscape Forms and Robert A.M. Stern Architects collections with authenticity and grace.
