Passive Infrared and Acoustic Detection Wall Switch Sensor for Commercial and Residential Lighting Control

The SENSORWORX family of wall switch occupancy sensors delivers a simple yet cost-effective lighting control solution ideal for retrofit applications. Engineered with contractors in mind, these sensors feature a significantly shallower housing than typical devices, resulting in less crowded wall boxes and easier installations. Their versatile wiring design supports both neutral (3-wire) and no-neutral (2-wire) configurations and allows the reversal of line and load connections without error. Utilizing advanced passive infrared (PIR) technology and digital signal processing, SENSORWORX sensors provide exceptional motion detection performance. Select models include an integrated microphone, which adds passive acoustic detection to ensure reliable occupancy sensing even in spaces where motion is limited or partially obstructed.

In operation, SENSORWORX sensors detect variations in infrared energy emitted by moving occupants within their field of view. When occupancy is detected, the internal relay activates the connected lighting load. Depending on configuration, the sensor can operate in occupancy (Auto On/Auto Off) or vacancy (Manual On/Auto Off) mode. For dual-technology units, the onboard microphone activates after the lights turn on, enhancing detection through passive acoustic sensing. An internal timer maintains illumination during brief inactivity and resets each time movement or sound is detected. Some models also include ambient daylight detection, preventing lights from turning on when natural light is sufficient from windows or skylights.

Wall switch sensors are typically installed as replacements for standard switches in small rooms or enclosed spaces. PIR-only models are ideal for areas with clear line-of-sight and frequent occupant movement such as copy rooms or storage areas. Dual-technology versions, combining PIR and acoustic sensing, are recommended for locations where occupants may be stationary or partially blocked from view, such as private offices, restrooms with stalls, small meeting rooms, or break rooms. Other common applications include vestibules and small offices, where reliable motion detection ensures energy-efficient and convenient lighting control.

Electrically, SENSORWORX sensors are designed for reliability and flexibility. Their interchangeable line and load wires eliminate wiring errors, and the devices are compatible with LED, fluorescent, and incandescent lighting. Electronic timing ensures long relay life, while compliance with NEC 404.2(c) and 404.22 guidelines prevents current leakage and improper grounding issues. Physically, the sensors are compact—25% to 40% shallower than typical models, extending less than one inch into the wall box. The distinctive bat-wing shaped lens enhances peripheral detection, while the rugged, vandal-resistant design ensures durability. Additional features include a modern appearance, an intuitive easy-tap button interface, a self-grounding mounting strap, and the ability to adjust settings without removing the cover plate.

Operationally, SENSORWORX devices provide wall-to-wall PIR coverage and small-motion detection up to 20 feet, with large-motion coverage extending beyond 36 feet. The optional acoustic sensing capability prevents false “offs” when occupants remain still, ensuring consistent illumination. Because detection is entirely passive, there is no risk of interference from other electronic devices. Configurable time delays, operating modes, and an ambient daylight override further enhance energy efficiency. A blue locator LED helps users locate the switch when lights are off, improving convenience in darkened spaces.

SENSORWORX sensors also offer seamless multi-gang switch integration for spaces where multiple switches are installed side-by-side. In these configurations, a wall switch occupancy sensor can share occupancy data with adjacent “sidecar” switches that control additional loads. Each device can be independently configured for Auto On or Manual On operation, as well as custom time delays. This allows all switches to fit neatly under a standard multi-gang decorator wall plate, preserving a clean, professional aesthetic. Additional sidecar switches can also be added for 3-pole or multi-location control setups.

For older buildings with inboard/outboard fluorescent lighting control, SENSORWORX provides a convenient two-pole retrofit solution with models such as the SWX-102 or SWX-122. These kits pair an Auto On occupancy sensor with a Manual On sidecar switch to satisfy partial-on energy code requirements efficiently. Similarly, bathrooms with multiple loads—such as separate switches for vanity lights, shower lights, and ventilation fans—can benefit from a SENSORWORX sensor paired with one or two sidecar switches, providing full occupancy-based control across all circuits for optimal energy savings and comfort.

Each SENSORWORX unit measures 2.74 inches in height, 1.68 inches in width, and 1.39 inches in depth (not including the mounting strap), and weighs 4.5 ounces. It mounts into a standard single-gang switch box and operates on 120–277 VAC at 50/60 Hz. The sensor supports loads up to 800W at 120 VAC or 1200W at 277 VAC, with no minimum load requirement, and is compatible with LED drivers, compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent ballasts, and incandescent sources.

Environmentally, SENSORWORX sensors function reliably in temperatures from 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C) and in relative humidity up to 95% non-condensing, for indoor use only. The devices meet ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and California Title 24 energy code requirements, supporting occupancy (Auto On/Auto Off), vacancy (Manual On/Auto Off), and partial-on modes where one pole turns on automatically and another manually to achieve compliance with partial-on energy standards.

For coverage, the sensors provide wall-to-wall detection at a recommended mounting height of 30 to 48 inches. Small motion, such as hand movements, can be detected up to 20 feet (approximately 625 square feet of coverage), while large motion, such as walking, can be detected beyond 36 feet (covering roughly 2,025 square feet). The optional acoustic detection ensures consistent occupancy coverage across the entire sensing area, with advanced signal processing that filters out nuisance noises without compromising sensitivity.

Overall, SENSORWORX wall switch occupancy sensors combine compact design, flexible wiring, and dual-technology detection to deliver an elegant, code-compliant, and energy-efficient lighting control solution for a wide range of commercial and residential applications.
