The FT 736 is a specialized omnidirectional heliport beacon designed to enhance heliport acquisition for pilots operating in the vicinity of a landing area. Its primary function is to emit a distinctive flashing white light pattern that clearly identifies the heliport, even amidst other ambient lighting. What sets this beacon apart is its transmission of the Morse code letter “H,” which consists of four rapid white flashes spaced 2/15 of a second apart, grouped at consistent two-second intervals. This unique signature makes the FT 736 easily distinguishable and recognizable to pilots navigating both visual and instrument flight conditions.
Engineered to support operations during various lighting conditions, the FT 736 is equipped with three selectable intensity modes to accommodate daytime, twilight, and nighttime usage. At high intensity for daytime visibility, it emits approximately 12,000 effective candelas (±25%). During twilight, the medium setting provides around 2,000 ECD, while the low intensity mode delivers 75 ECD for nighttime use. The beacon maintains full 360-degree horizontal beam coverage and a 17-degree vertical beam, ensuring maximum visibility from all approach angles. This wide optical range enhances pilot orientation and heliport location precision, especially in complex environments.
The beacon system includes the FH 710 flashhead, which houses the optical assembly and produces the required luminous output for each operational mode. The aerodynamic design of the flashhead minimizes wind resistance, with a calculated wind area of 0.93 square feet (0.0864 square meters). Electrical power is managed through the PC 736 power converter, compatible with input voltages of 120, 208, or 240 volts at 60 Hz, and 230 volts at 50 Hz. The unit operates on single-phase power (specified at the time of order) and consumes approximately 410 watts. For system integrity and diagnostics, Form C status relay contacts are included, which activate on failure to trigger alerts or automated system checks.
To support installation, operation, and long-term maintenance, the FT 736 is supplied with a comprehensive instruction manual and detailed technical drawings. Flash Technology offers customer support through its National Operations Center (NOC), where trained technical staff can assist with troubleshooting and program information. For hands-on instruction, onsite training is available through Flash University. Moreover, all airport and heliport lighting systems manufactured by Flash Technology, including the FT 736, comply with the Buy American Act, ensuring they meet stringent domestic production standards and regulatory requirements.
