The LumenRadio MWA-N3 (Third Generation Mira Wide Area) module represents a high-performance, industrial-grade, long-range, multi-standard radio solution designed for high-volume production. It delivers exceptional reliability, range, and flexibility for industrial, commercial, and IoT applications. The MWA-N3 improves on its predecessor, the MWA-N2, with a new state-of-the-art RF front-end design that significantly enhances the link budget. This improvement results in an extended operational range, supporting deployments that require robust long-distance wireless communication. The module includes both onboard and external antenna options, easily selectable through firmware, enabling adaptable integration depending on design requirements.
At the heart of the MWA-N3 is the Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840 chipset, featuring a powerful ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. The module incorporates a dual-radio architecture, supporting Bluetooth-based protocols as well as 802.15.4-based protocols. It is optimized for operation with MiraOS and the MiraMesh radio stack, providing reliable meshed network communication. The Multi-Standard Support (MSS) feature enables concurrent operation of MiraMesh and Bluetooth v5.0, as well as NFC, allowing simultaneous mesh networking, commissioning, and user interaction via smartphones or tablets. Ultra-low energy consumption allows the module to operate efficiently in battery-powered products or energy-harvesting applications, making it suitable for a wide range of use cases where power efficiency is critical. Its small SMD footprint allows easy integration into existing product designs without compromising performance.
The MWA-N3 supports ultra-reliable and scalable meshed networking, delivering IPv6 compatibility and high-precision time synchronization with less than 50 μs clock deviation across the network. This enables precise time stamping of data or accurate event triggering. The module also supports Bluetooth beacons in any format, concurrent Bluetooth operation, automated PA and LNA control for extended range, and firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates. Cognitive Coexistence technology leverages adaptive frequency hopping to provide ultra-reliable data transfer with minimal power consumption. The module achieves average current consumption as low as 7 μA in non-routing (leaf) mode and 16 μA in routing (meshing) mode, while sustaining network throughput up to 1,200 packets per minute for 160-byte packets, ensuring high-capacity communication across the mesh network.
Technically, the MWA-N3 operates with configurable transmit output power up to 23 dBm and receiver sensitivity of –96 dBm, providing a 119 dB link budget for exceptional range. The module supports an onboard antenna or external antenna connector, as well as NFC-A communication. It functions across an ambient temperature range of –40 °C to +85 °C and operates from 1.7 VDC to 3.6 VDC. The module includes 1 MB of flash memory and 256 kB of RAM, an ARM Cortex-M4F microcontroller running at 64 MHz, AES 128-bit ECB/CCM/AAR hardware acceleration, and multiple peripheral interfaces, including 12-bit ADC, SPI, I2C, UART, PWM, USB 2.0, and GPIO. With pre-certifications for Europe (ETSI RED), the United States (FCC/CFR 47 Part 15 unlicensed modular transmitter approval), and Canada (IC RSS), the MWA-N3 ensures regulatory compliance for global deployment. Its compact footprint measures 33.5 x 18.5 x 3.77 mm, making it ideal for integration into a variety of industrial, IoT, and commercial devices.
The MWA-N3 combines long-range capability, multi-standard communication, ultra-low power consumption, and scalable meshing performance in a compact, industrial-grade module, delivering a flexible and future-proof solution for modern wireless networking applications.
