0–10V Dimming Wall Switch Sensor with Passive Infrared Motion Detection and Acoustic Overlap Coverage Design

The 0–10V dimming wall switch occupancy sensor is engineered for flexibility, ease of installation, and advanced performance, making it an ideal choice for retrofit lighting control applications. Designed with contractors in mind, it features a notably shallow profile—25 to 40 percent less depth than standard dimmers and sensors—reducing wall box crowding and simplifying wiring. Its versatile electrical design supports both neutral (3-wire) and no-neutral (2-wire) installations and allows for line and load reversal without risk of miswiring. Utilizing advanced passive infrared (PIR) technology and digital signal processing, the sensor delivers exceptional motion detection accuracy. Models are also available with an integrated microphone for passive acoustic detection, enhancing occupancy sensing in spaces where movement may be limited or partially obstructed. For dimming control, intuitive on/off, raise, and lower buttons provide simple and precise manual light level adjustment.

The sensor operates by detecting movement through changes in infrared energy emitted by occupants as they move within its field of view. Upon identifying occupancy, its internal relay activates power to the connected lighting. Units can be configured for occupancy (Auto On/Auto Off) or vacancy (Manual On/Auto Off) modes. In dual-technology models, the built-in microphone complements PIR sensing by maintaining light operation through passive acoustic detection, particularly useful when occupants remain stationary. The internal timer ensures lights remain on during brief inactivity and resets whenever occupancy is detected by either PIR or acoustic means. Models equipped with daylight sensing can hold lighting off when sufficient ambient daylight is present from windows or skylights, further conserving energy.

Wall switch occupancy sensors are typically used to replace existing wall switches in smaller rooms or enclosed areas. A PIR-only unit is well suited for spaces with clear lines of sight and regular occupant movement such as copy rooms or storage areas, while dual-technology sensors are ideal for environments where occupants may be partially out of view or motionless, such as restrooms with stalls, private offices, vestibules, small meeting rooms, and break rooms.

Electrically, the dimming wall switch sensor offers exceptional versatility. It accommodates both neutral and no-neutral wiring configurations and is electronically timed to ensure long relay life. It is compatible with 0–10V dimmable LED drivers and fluorescent lighting ballasts and adheres to NEC 404.2(c) and 404.22 requirements for grounding and current leakage. The unit operates on 120/277 VAC, 50/60 Hz, with load ratings up to 800W at 120V or 1200W at 277V and no minimum load restriction. The 0–10V output is designed for IEC 60929 Annex E.2-compliant ballasts and drivers, supporting up to 50 mA (sink only).

Physically, the unit measures 2.74 inches high, 1.68 inches wide, and 1.39 inches deep (excluding the mounting strap) and weighs 4.5 ounces. Its compact enclosure allows installation in a standard single-gang wall box. The bat-wing shaped lens provides enhanced peripheral coverage, while the vandal-resistant housing ensures durability in high-traffic locations. A self-grounding mounting strap simplifies installation, and settings can be adjusted without removing the cover plate. The device features a modern, streamlined appearance complemented by easy-tap buttons for on/off, raise, and lower control, and a blue locator LED that remains visible when lights are off.

Operationally, the sensor provides wall-to-wall passive infrared detection with small-motion sensitivity up to 20 feet and large-motion coverage exceeding 36 feet—effectively covering spaces up to approximately 2,025 square feet. When equipped, the acoustic detection layer overlaps the entire area, maintaining lighting continuity during periods of minimal motion. Advanced signal processing filters out background noise to prevent false triggers without reducing sensitivity. The sensor supports configurable settings including time delays ranging from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, selectable test modes, and various occupancy or vacancy operating modes.

As a 0–10V dimming control device, the sensor also provides extensive customization for light output behavior. Users can define high-end and low-end trim levels to establish maximum and minimum brightness limits—ideal for energy-conscious task tuning or maintaining consistent light quality. The device recalls the last user-set brightness or turns on to a preset level (100%, 50%, or custom). When turning off, lighting can either switch off completely via relay operation or dim below the electronic off level. For certain applications, lighting can be maintained at the low-end trim level during unoccupied periods for safety or aesthetic preference.

Both fade-on and fade-off times are adjustable, offering smooth transitions between lighting levels. Options include fade durations of 0.75, 1.5, 3, 5, or 15 seconds for both ramp-up and ramp-down intervals. The dimming curve—defining how voltage output corresponds to user adjustments—can be configured to linear (default), square law, or logarithmic response types to accommodate different lighting technologies and user preferences.

For enhanced performance in spaces with reflective surfaces, a turn-on sensitivity setting can reduce PIR responsiveness during initial activation to prevent false triggering from sunlight reflections or window glare. After startup, full sensitivity automatically resumes for normal operation.

The sensor performs within an environmental range of 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C) and up to 95% non-condensing relative humidity for indoor applications. It is compliant with ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and Title 24 energy codes, supporting occupancy (Auto On/Auto Off), vacancy (Manual On/Auto Off), and partial-on operation modes where lights automatically activate to 50% brightness and can be manually raised as needed.

Overall, the 0–10V dimming wall switch occupancy sensor integrates advanced motion and acoustic detection with flexible dimming functionality, daylight response, and user configurability. Compact, intuitive, and code-compliant, it delivers an efficient, high-performance solution for both new construction and retrofit lighting control applications across commercial and institutional environments.
