LED Street Light with Integrated RF Communication for Smart City Infrastructure

Olle Lundberg’s new street lighting fixture, Pepper, features a distinctive and modern design crafted from a single die-cast aluminium casting. Lundberg aimed to create a shape that had not been explored before, resulting in a luminaire with a unique expression. The top of the shade is facetted, which produces a variety of dynamic patterns as light interacts with the multiple facets. Inside, Pepper is equipped with advanced lighting technology designed to deliver optimal light distribution, ensuring excellent performance for outdoor environments.

Constructed with a robust die-cast aluminium housing and pole attachment, Pepper offers durability and longevity, enhanced by materials such as aluzinc-treated stainless steel screws and flat tempered safety glass with screen printing. The design combines aesthetic appeal with functional toughness, making it a valuable addition to any outdoor lighting application. Installation options include mounting on post arms with dimensions of Ø48 mm or Ø60 mm, or directly on straight post arms measuring Ø60 mm or Ø76 mm.

Prepared for future smart city technologies, Pepper is compatible with various lighting control systems, including Zhaga and Nema sockets, as well as Seneco Citygrids for presence-controlled and connected lighting solutions. The luminaire features Ateljé Lyktan’s proprietary LED light engine, consisting of 32 individually controlled light points, which create a well-diffused glow with precise light distribution. Two optional light distributions are available: LM2, designed for streets and paths, and LM3, optimized for wider streets and parking areas. A third option, Batwing, offers a well-dimmed asymmetric light pattern ideal for pathways.

Pepper comes standard with Constant Lumen Output (CLO) technology, guaranteeing a consistent light level throughout its lifetime with an L100B10 rating of 100,000 hours. The LED modules use high-power diodes paired with specialized lenses to ensure effective street lighting optics, available in color temperatures of 3000K or 4000K with a minimum CRI of 80. The luminaire supports multiple lumen packages ranging from 2700 to 10,000 lumens, all featuring CLO.

In terms of materials and connections, Pepper’s housing and pole attachment are made of die-cast aluminium, with aluzinc-treated stainless steel screws securing the components. The diffuser consists of hardened safety glass, with the 2200-lumen Batwing version utilizing tempered glass with a frosted film for improved glare control. The luminaire is supplied with halogen-free connection cables of varying lengths depending on the lumen output, ensuring safe and flexible installation.

Pepper’s driver is a programmable outdoor-rated unit with a lifespan of 100,000 hours and a maximum failure rate of 10%. It supports advanced features such as two customizable night dimming scenes, Zhaga and Nema sockets (with double sockets available on request), and integration with Seneco Citygrid presence sensors and RF communication controllers. This enables remote control and monitoring through web-based software for enhanced lighting management.

With a projected wind area of 0.148 m² from below and 0.053 m² from the side, Pepper is engineered to withstand outdoor conditions with an IK class rating of 10, reflecting high impact resistance. This combination of innovative design, advanced technology, and durable materials makes Pepper a forward-thinking solution for modern urban lighting challenges.
