The AV-BSBL is a versatile LED approach light barrette designed for both permanent and portable use, assisting pilots in visually identifying and aligning their aircraft accurately with the runway. This light barrette meets rigorous lighting standards set by the FAA, UFC, and NAVAIR, ensuring it is suitable for a wide range of aviation applications. The AV-BSBL integrates seamlessly into the Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System (MALSR) configuration, contributing to enhanced runway visibility and pilot guidance.

The MALSR system itself comprises multiple components, including six steady burning barrettes like the AV-BSBL, fifteen stand-alone steady burning lights, and five sequenced flashing lights. This combination of steady and flashing lighting elements provides pilots with clear visual cues during instrument landing approaches. Avlite’s approach lighting system is highly configurable to meet diverse operational requirements and is available with various power options. These include AC power, DC power, AC with battery backup, and AC/battery backup supplemented with solar energy, enabling reliable operation even in remote or power-limited environments.

The portable version of the AV-BSBL is thoughtfully designed to fold compactly for easy storage and transportation, making it ideal for expeditionary, tactical, or temporary and semi-permanent runway lighting needs. For solar-powered configurations, the AV-BSBL utilizes a high-efficiency 100-watt monocrystalline solar module with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for optimal charging performance. The sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, rated at 24 volts and 25 ampere-hours, is integrated with an onboard charger, supporting continuous, reliable operation.

Physically, the AV-BSBL features a robust painted aluminum body and a glass lens designed with multi-LED optics to maximize light output and distribution. The barrette can be mounted both permanently or in a portable setup. Its dimensions include a height of 25.65 inches (652 mm) and a width of 129.75 inches (3296 mm) when unfolded, reducing to 69.84 inches (1774 mm) when folded for compact storage. The unit weighs approximately 62 pounds (28 kilograms), balancing portability with durability. The AV-BSBL has a service life of up to 12 years, providing long-term reliability in demanding environments.

The system is engineered to withstand extreme environmental conditions, including wind speeds up to 300 mph (483 kph) for the barrette itself and 125 mph (201 kph) for the solar panel.
