The RELIANCE elevated LED light fixture is a unidirectional lighting solution specifically designed for stopway applications, emitting a distinctive red light. These advanced LED fixtures can be equipped with the innovative IQ built-in Individual Lamp Control and Monitoring System (ILCMS) remote, which forms a vital component of an intelligent airfield lighting infrastructure.

This fixture complies with a wide range of current international standards, including FAA specifications L-862(L) and L-862E(L) as outlined in AC 150/5345-46 and FAA Engineering Brief No. 67, with ETL certification. It also meets ICAO Annex 14 Volume I requirements, as well as standards set by EASA CS-ADR-DSN, NATO STANAG 3316, Canada TP 312, and Australia MOS 139. These certifications ensure the fixture’s reliability and suitability for global aviation needs.

The RELIANCE elevated LED light is suitable for multiple runway applications as defined by ICAO, including runway edges on runways up to 60 meters wide, runway ends, runway thresholds, combined threshold/end areas, and stopways. Similarly, FAA applications cover runway edge (L-862(L)), runway end (L-862E(L)), runway threshold (L-862E(L)), and threshold/end uses (L-862E(L)).

The fixture is available in three versions to meet different operational requirements: the RELIANCE® IQ model with integrated ILCMS for intelligent monitoring and control, a monitored version with fail-open technology for system safety, and a non-monitored version without monitoring functionality.

One of the key advantages of this LED fixture is its exceptionally low energy consumption, typically drawing only 25 watts for unidirectional lights and 30 watts for bidirectional variants. This represents a significant reduction compared to traditional tungsten halogen lights, which may consume 120 to 200 watts. Maintenance demands are greatly decreased, supported by a calculated mean time between failures (MTBF) of 56,000 hours at 6.6 amps. The lights are fully dimmable, conforming to the dimming response curves of traditional halogen lamps, and operate efficiently across a wide current range from 2.8 to 6.6 amps. Additionally, the LED lights have a rapid rise time when turned on, making them well suited for integration with runway incursion protection systems.

An optional individual light source monitoring feature enhances safety and reliability. Should a defect occur, the LED fixture automatically disconnects from the secondary side of the isolation transformer, creating an open circuit condition that external monitoring systems can detect. The RELIANCE IQ version is fully compatible with the RELIANCE Intelligent Lighting 2A system, allowing for additional power savings and advanced monitoring capabilities through ILCMS.

Installation and maintenance are made straightforward thanks to the ability to mount these LED fixtures on the same devices used for traditional elevated halogen lights, simplifying upgrades and reducing costs. Leveling and aiming the light in azimuth can be easily achieved via a dedicated aiming device, with three screws providing a 4-degree leveling adjustment post-installation. The fixture’s upper body can be replaced without the need for realignment, reducing downtime. Bidirectional runway edge fixtures come standard with an omnidirectional beam for circular guidance, eliminating the need for additional optics.

The fixture’s design emphasizes durability and operational resilience. Its low-profile and compact size enable it to withstand intense jet blast forces, even when installed at critical locations such as runway thresholds or ends. It offers options for either a glass or UV-resistant polycarbonate outer lens. The use of LEDs removes the need for filter replacements and eliminates color shifts caused by viewing angles or constant current regulator (CCR) step settings. The cord set’s sealed entry into the optical assembly prevents insect ingress, and the fixture carries an IP66 rating for protection against dust and water. All hardware components are stainless steel, while the aluminum body is phosphated and finished with a baked polyester electrostatic powder coating in aviation yellow, ensuring corrosion resistance and long-lasting performance.

Operational benefits include increased runway availability due to reduced maintenance requirements, as well as optimum and uniform light distribution along the runway. The fixture delivers high function discrimination, with saturated, stable colors maintained consistently across brightness levels and viewing angles. The robust lightning protection system meets the stringent ANSI/IEEE C62.41-1991 Location Category C2 standard, as detailed in FAA Engineering Brief 67. This category addresses surge conditions of 1.2/50 μS – 8/20 μS combination waves with a peak voltage of 10,000 volts and peak current of 5,000 amperes, ensuring fixture resilience against electrical disturbances.

Regarding power supply compatibility, the non-monitored and monitored versions of the RELIANCE light are designed to work with any IEC- or FAA-compliant transformer rated up to 150 watts. The IQ-equipped lights support transformers with capacities up to 300 watts, accommodating advanced intelligent lighting system requirements.
