The IUL-L is a versatile and high-performance LED inset light designed for both heliport and high-security ground lighting applications. Available in 8" and 12" sizes, this robust fixture delivers exceptional illumination in demanding environments where a combination of horizontal and vertical light distribution is required. The IUL-L serves multiple functions including perimeter and utility lighting, supporting heliport operations, enhancing security, and assisting with under-vehicle inspections. Its reliability and design make it ideal for applications in military, civilian, and industrial settings where safety and visibility are critical.
On heliports, the IUL-L LED fixture is commonly used for boundary marking of final approach and takeoff (FATO) areas, touchdown and lift-off (TLOF) areas, aprons, taxiway edges, and aiming points. Green lights are typically installed for new civilian applications, while yellow lights are more often used in military or legacy civilian environments. The fixture is designed to operate on constant voltage sources and provides a dependable level of light output comparable to FAA-specified medium intensity standards, without the need for battery replacements.
Beyond aviation, the IUL-L has proven value in security infrastructure. It is deployed at security gates, under vehicles, in maintenance facilities to detect vehicle damage, and in high-risk zones to aid in the detection of bombs and smuggled items. It also supports the protection of entrances to restricted areas and is suitable for lighting fixed installations and high-priority targets. The fixture can be configured in various patterns or used individually to accommodate changing traffic needs and optimize area coverage.
The IUL-L is engineered for durability, ease of maintenance, and energy efficiency. Its ultra-low profile, measuring less than 0.25 inches above ground, minimizes vibration caused by passing vehicles, thereby extending its operational lifespan. The LED light output remains stable across a wide input voltage range of 95–264 VAC at 50/60 Hz. With an average rated LED life of 100,000 hours, the fixture ensures long maintenance intervals and reduced spare part requirements, leading to lower overall lifecycle costs.
The fixture features a thermostatically controlled arctic heater (U.S. Patent 7192155 B2) that activates below freezing temperatures to melt snow and ice, maintaining clear light output. Unlike incandescent systems, this smart heating feature minimizes energy consumption by cycling on and off only as needed. Additionally, the lower lens temperature reduces contaminant build-up, preventing the “baking effect” and maintaining long-term photometric performance.
Constructed with high-strength materials, including an aluminum alloy outer housing, inner cover, and optical assembly, as well as stainless steel hardware and a hardened optical glass lens, the IUL-L is built to withstand the rollover weight of large aircraft and the harshest operating conditions. It can be supplied with shallow bases for in-pavement installations and is compatible with standard FAA L-823 style connectors, which provide complete environmental sealing and eliminate the risk of fluid ingress along wiring pathways.
Manufactured in accordance with FAA Advisory Circular 150/5345-46 (current edition) and Engineering Brief No. 67, the IUL-L meets the requirements for FAA L-852T(L) lighting and is also available for use with series circuit configurations. This fixture represents a rugged, intelligent solution for airside and security lighting, backed by field-proven reliability in thousands of installations worldwide.
