FAA L-810 and ICAO Compliant Solar LED Obstruction Light for Wind Turbines and Aviation Safety

The OL1-ST is a solar-powered, low-intensity red LED obstruction light engineered for a wide array of aviation safety applications. Designed to mark potential hazards such as wind turbines, towers, bridges, and similar structures, the OL1-ST enhances visibility and supports air traffic safety by emitting a wide asymmetrical vertical light beam that meets or exceeds the requirements set by FAA L-810 and ICAO Type A and B obstacle lighting standards. Straight out of the box, the OL1-ST is programmed for a steady burn mode and is backed by a five-year limited warranty, offering long-term reliability and efficiency for critical installations.

Constructed for durability and ease of use, the OL1-ST features a clear aviation-grade acrylic Fresnel lens for optimized light dispersion and a rugged painted cast aluminum base with stainless steel latches and hardware to ensure corrosion resistance. A neoprene gasket provides weatherproof sealing, and the fixture is offered in both side hub and bottom hub configurations. Installation and maintenance require no specialized tools, adding to its practicality in the field. Its power efficiency is notable, consuming 96% less energy compared to traditional incandescent lighting systems.

The OL1-ST is designed for global regulatory compliance, adhering to the United States FAA AC 150/5345-43H standards and ICAO Annex 14, Volume I (Seventh Edition, July 2016) international guidelines. The lighting unit offers programmable photometric profiles, including 10 candela (cd) for ICAO Type A and 32.5 cd for ICAO Type B and FAA L-810 applications. The light beam exhibits a 10° spread at 50% peak intensity, with peak output occurring at 8° above the horizontal. It also integrates Schmidt-Clausen intensity correction for accurate performance during short-duration flashes.

Power is provided by either a 12Ah or 24Ah long-life Lead Crystal battery, designed for extreme environments with charging capabilities from -30°C to +50°C and a projected battery life of approximately six years. The complete fixture is engineered for a 12-year service life, excluding the battery. The unit's body is waterproof to an IP-68 standard, capable of withstanding immersion in 1.5 meters of water for up to an hour, and operates reliably under harsh environmental stressors, including salt spray, 140-knot winds, 25kg/m² ice loading, and shocks up to 75g with 5g vibration resistance in all directions.

Optional features enhance operational flexibility. Using an optional remote, users can customize the OL1-ST’s functions one at a time, with the light confirming the setting changes by flashing coded signals. Programmable settings include flash patterns, effective intensity levels, day/night transitions, synchronization controls, sleep and test modes, transport mode for pre-deployment programming, and low voltage cutoff thresholds. The GPS synchronization feature, which ensures synchronized flashing across multiple units, operates at a low average power draw of 1 mA.

Electrically, the unit runs on a 12 VDC system with an operating voltage range from 9 to 18 VDC. It uses mono-crystalline solar panels arranged vertically in four quadrants (90° apart) to maximize solar input across all orientations. Current consumption varies by lighting requirement, with FAA L-810 applications using approximately 85 mA and ICAO Type B applications requiring 115 mA. Night-off current is minimal at 2.5 mA (4.5 mA with GPS), and daytime operation uses just 0.3 mA.

In terms of construction, the OL1-ST’s obstacle light features an acrylic lens securely glued into place and a plastic center bird spike to deter nesting. The base and solar power unit are made of UV-stable, injection-molded polycarbonate, with o-ring seals to ensure environmental protection and longevity. Internal pressure equalization is managed via a membrane inside the solar body, and cooling is handled through convection.

Overall, the OL1-ST represents a robust, energy-efficient, and highly configurable obstruction lighting solution for both domestic and international aviation hazard marking requirements, capable of withstanding the most demanding operational environments.
