FAA and ICAO Certified Elevated Stop Bar LED Fixture for Intelligent Airfield Lighting

The RELIANCE Stop Bar Elevated LED Light Fixture, designated as L-862S(L), is a unidirectional elevated lighting solution specifically designed for stop bar applications using red LEDs. This fixture can be optionally equipped with the innovative IQ built-in Individual Lamp Control and Monitoring System (ILCMS) remote, which serves as a key component in the development of intelligent airfield lighting systems.

This fixture complies with several rigorous aviation standards and regulations to ensure optimal performance and safety. These include the FAA specifications outlined in AC 150/5345-46 and FAA Engineering Brief No. 67, ICAO Annex 14 Volume I, EASA CS-ADR-DSN, US Military UFC 3-535-01 section 3-1.4, NATO STANAG 3316, and Canada TP 312. Such comprehensive compliance makes the RELIANCE Stop Bar fixture suitable for use in a broad range of international airports and military airfields.

The RELIANCE Stop Bar elevated LED light is employed in various critical airfield applications as defined by ICAO and FAA standards. These include approach centerlines and cross bars, approach siderows, runway thresholds and their wing bars, runway ends, and specifically stop bar lighting designated under FAA L-862S(L). It also serves for runway threshold and end lighting as per FAA L-862E(L) specifications.

Available in three distinct versions, the RELIANCE unidirectional elevated fixture offers flexibility to meet different operational needs. The IQ version integrates ILCMS for advanced remote monitoring and control. The monitored version incorporates fail-open technology to maintain system integrity in case of LED failure. Lastly, the non-monitored version provides a basic LED lighting solution without integrated monitoring functions.

Efficiency is a hallmark of the RELIANCE Stop Bar light, delivering high-intensity illumination while consuming less than 50 watts, with a power factor of 0.95. This is a significant improvement over traditional incandescent fixtures, which typically require 150 to 200 watts. The fixture is designed to be mounted on existing hardware compatible with most elevated halogen lights, enabling straightforward retrofit installations. The aiming and leveling process is user-friendly, facilitated by a dedicated aiming device and two opposing screws that ensure stable and precise positioning. These lights are fully dimmable and conform to the traditional halogen light response curve, supporting energy savings and operational flexibility. Additionally, the IQ 2A functionality allows for integration with the RELIANCE Intelligent Lighting Control and Monitoring System, providing further power savings and customizable intensity control.

Sustainability is a key advantage of the RELIANCE Stop Bar LED fixture. It offers an average mean time between failures (MTBF) of 56,000 hours at full intensity and can exceed 200,000 hours under typical operating conditions. This longevity translates to a significant reduction in maintenance demands and relamping expenses. The fixture’s low profile and compact size enable it to withstand intense jet blast forces, even when installed at demanding locations such as runway thresholds or ends. When replacing traditional quartz-incandescent fixtures with RELIANCE LEDs, airports can increase lighting density without needing to expand their constant current regulator (CCR) capacity, minimizing additional infrastructure costs. The use of LEDs eliminates the need for filter replacements and prevents color shifts that can occur with varying viewing angles or CCR step settings. The fixture’s IP67 rating ensures protection against water ingress, dust, and insects, further extending its durability.

Safety features are robust and well-engineered. The fixture incorporates rugged lightning protection that complies with ANSI/IEEE C62.41-1991 Location Category C2 standards, as detailed in FAA Engineering Brief 67. This category covers high-energy transient events characterized by combination waves with peak voltages of 10,000 volts and peak currents of 5,000 amperes. Additionally, the LED light may include an internal monitoring function, which, upon detecting a defect, automatically disconnects the LED from the secondary side of the isolation transformer, resulting in an open circuit condition. This feature allows external lamp fault detection devices within Constant Current Regulators and ILCMS to effectively monitor and identify failed lights.

The RELIANCE Stop Bar elevated LED fixtures are designed to operate seamlessly with any IEC- or FAA-compliant transformer rated up to 150 watts. Detailed power load calculations and installation guidelines can be found in the product manual, ensuring proper integration with airport lighting systems and optimizing performance and reliability.
