Explosion-proof LED Linear Fixtures with Integrated Battery Backup for Emergency Lighting

The Pauluhn DLLA series by Eaton’s Crouse-Hinds Division is a line of explosionproof linear LED light fixtures specifically designed to replace traditional fluorescent lighting such as T12, T8, and T5HO lamps commonly used on land-based and offshore drilling platforms. Available in two sizes, the DLLA comes in 2-foot and 4-foot versions, offering typical lumen outputs of 4,000 and 8,000 lumens respectively. These fixtures are engineered with a rugged and durable design that is well-suited for the demanding environments of drilling applications where high vibration, impact, and hose-down conditions are common. Their industry-leading versatile mounting options provide flexible installation solutions that accommodate ceiling, wall, pole, pendant, swivel, and flush mount configurations.

The Pauluhn DLLA series is built to withstand harsh environments while delivering high performance. It features a long service life of up to 60,000 hours at 55°C ambient temperature, combined with high energy efficiency of up to 134 lumens per watt on the DLLA2 model with the UNV1 driver. Designed with a low profile of approximately 4.4 inches in height (excluding mounting brackets), these fixtures are ideal for installations in confined or low-clearance areas. The fixtures also incorporate custom optics, including standard wide beam spreads for maximum illumination of wall panels and full cut-off beam spreads that provide targeted lighting to reduce spill and prevent light loss. Their ruggedness is further demonstrated by passing stringent tests, including a 2,000 PSI high-pressure hose-down rating and a 5G 3-axis vibration test to ensure resilience to shock and vibration.

Safety and compliance are integral to the Pauluhn DLLA’s design. The fixtures meet extensive certifications, including NEC/CEC standards for Class I, Division 2 (Groups A, B, C, D) and Class II, Division 2 (Groups F, G), as well as Class I, Zone 2 hazardous locations. They are rated for marine and wet locations with Type 4X, IP66/IP67 ingress protection. The fixtures comply with several UL standards such as UL844 for electrical fixture hangers, UL924 for emergency lighting equipment (applicable to the emergency battery backup models), UL1598 for luminaires, UL1598A for marine vessel installation, and UL8750 for LED equipment. CSA certifications C22.2 Nos. 137, 141, and 250 further verify compliance with rigorous industry safety and performance requirements.

The Pauluhn DLLA offers an integrated emergency lighting option with a self-contained battery backup system providing a 90-minute runtime at a minimum of 1,000 lumens output. This makes the fixtures ideal for critical applications requiring uninterrupted illumination during power outages. The emergency models are designed to operate reliably between 0°C and +40°C ambient temperature, while the standard fixtures operate within a wider range from -40°C to +65°C, making the series adaptable to a variety of climates and conditions.

Installation and maintenance have been streamlined with versatile mounting options and easy access to drivers and wiring. No custom brackets or hardware are needed, facilitating faster setup and retrofit applications. The fixtures include four points of secondary retention for safety and feature standard surge protection of 4kV line-to-line and 6kV line-to-earth, with enhanced surge protection options (SRG1 or SRG3 suffix) offering greater than 10kV protection line-to-line and line-to-earth, safeguarding the fixture electronics against voltage spikes.

The construction materials of the Pauluhn DLLA contribute to its durability and resistance to corrosion and impact. The housing is made of copper-free aluminum with an optional Corro-free™ epoxy powder coat for additional protection. Lens options include clear or diffused glass and polycarbonate, allowing customization based on lighting needs. This material selection ensures long-lasting performance in tough industrial environments, including areas exposed to diesel fuel and rigorous hose-down cleaning.

Applications for the Pauluhn DLLA are focused on land-based and offshore drilling rigs, with common installation areas including derricks, masts, SCR houses, top drives, operator houses, power stations, and pump stations. The fixtures replace less efficient fluorescent tubes with a modern LED solution that dramatically reduces energy consumption. Energy comparisons show that the 2-foot DLLA fixture can save up to 67% energy over T12HO fluorescent lamps and up to 52% compared to T5HO lamps. Similarly, the 4-foot DLLA can reduce energy use by as much as 64% compared to T12HO and 50% compared to T5HO equivalents.

In summary, the Pauluhn DLLA linear LED light fixtures are robust, high-performance lighting solutions engineered for the challenging environments of drilling platforms. They combine durability, versatility, energy efficiency, and compliance with stringent hazardous location standards, making them an ideal upgrade for existing fluorescent installations in hazardous, high-vibration, and wet environments. Their advanced features such as integrated emergency lighting, flexible mounting, and high ingress protection ensure safety and operational reliability in the most demanding industrial settings.
