Explosion-Proof LED Exit Signs for Hazardous Locations Zone 1, 2, 21, and 22 with Intrinsically Safe Circuits for Explosive Atmospheres

The CEAG EXIT and EXIT2 LED exit signs from Eaton’s Crouse-Hinds Division are specifically designed for use in hazardous locations classified as Zone 1, Zone 21, Zone 2, and Zone 22. These non-metallic LED exit signs are engineered to mark escape routes and exits in IEC explosive atmospheres, offering reliable and maintenance-free performance. Featuring long-life white LEDs, intrinsically safe circuits, and an IP66 rating, these exit signs provide durability and safety in challenging environments. The series includes multiple models tailored to customer needs, such as AC-only versions, AC with self-contained battery systems, and AC with V-CG-S modules for connection to central emergency lighting supply systems.

The EXIT and EXIT2 luminaires carry significant certifications and compliances that demonstrate their suitability for hazardous areas. These include the EC-Type Examination Certificate BVS 09 ATEX E 029 and the IECEx Certificate of Conformity IECEx BVS 13.0017. They are marked according to the 2014/34/EU ATEX directive with Ex II 2 G Ex e ib mb IIC T6/T5 Gb for gas atmospheres and Ex II 2 D Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db for dust atmospheres. These exit signs meet the stringent IP66 degree of protection, ensuring they are well-protected against dust and water ingress for both indoor and outdoor use.

Design-wise, the EXIT series offers multiple pictogram configurations to clearly and safely indicate the appropriate egress routes, tailored to meet diverse application requirements. The robust polycarbonate housing is highly durable and corrosion-resistant, making the luminaires suitable for harsh industrial environments. Power-saving LED technology delivers a maintenance-free service life with high efficiency, reducing operational costs. Self-contained battery units with automatic function monitoring are available, ensuring reliable emergency illumination. Additionally, the luminaires can be connected and monitored via CEAG emergency lighting supply systems for centralized control and diagnostics.

As leaders in hazardous area lighting, the EXIT series fulfills the requirements of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and EN 60598 Part 2.22 for emergency lighting luminaires. These luminaires are specifically designed to mark escape routes and exits in potentially explosive atmospheres. The exclusive use of white, high-efficiency LEDs guarantees maintenance-free operation over the entire service life of approximately 50,000 hours, eliminating the need for lamp replacement. The intrinsically safe LED circuits and supply electronics are engineered for this extensive operating time, reducing maintenance efforts and enhancing operational safety, especially in difficult-to-access locations. The wide input voltage range from 110 V to 277 V AC and up to 250 V DC allows international use, and the IECEx certification further expands its global applicability. Visibility reaches up to 25 meters, and a variety of pictograms allow for country-specific solutions without difficulty.

The EXIT series luminaires are suitable for various applications. They are available as mains-only versions (“EXIT” and “EXIT 2”) designed for specialized industrial networks and production plants, versions with individual function monitoring for use in CEAG emergency lighting supply systems (“EXIT V-CG-S” and “EXIT 2 V-CG-S”), as well as self-contained emergency lighting versions (“EXIT-N” and “EXIT 2 N”) with automatic function and operating time tests. Thanks to the robust, all-plastic polycarbonate housing with a high protection rating of IP66, these luminaires can be installed almost anywhere, both indoors and outdoors. The protection type Ex e m ib IIC up to T6 and Ex tb IIIC T80°C certifies their use in hazardous areas with explosive gas atmospheres (Zones 1 and 2) and explosive dust atmospheres (Zones 21 and 22). The EXIT 2 series is specifically designed for Zones 2 and 22.

Safety is paramount with the EXIT series. These explosion-protected escape sign luminaires meet all legal emergency and safety lighting requirements, ensuring operational reliability at all times. The luminaires are engineered to safely guide personnel through complex industrial layouts and hazardous zones, where lighting clarity and reliability can save lives.

Self-contained battery system versions of the EXIT luminaires provide decentralized emergency lighting independent of central systems, proving especially economical in large facilities. Unlike older models, the EXIT N and EXIT 2 N now include advanced monitoring functions that give constant status updates. Five green LEDs behind the protective cover indicate the charge status and available battery capacity in 20% increments. A yellow LED signals emergency lighting mode, while a red LED indicates any faults.

The extended self-monitoring system performs automatic weekly function tests, electronically switching the luminaire from mains to battery operation to verify emergency lighting capability. Faults are immediately flagged by the flashing red LED. Furthermore, a partial operating time test lasting 35 minutes runs approximately every three months. Should the luminaire fail to maintain a minimum emergency operation time of 30 minutes, the fault LED will flash. Once faults are corrected—such as battery replacement or recharge—the fault indication resets after the next successful emergency operation.

Overall, the CEAG EXIT and EXIT2 LED exit sign series combines robust construction, comprehensive certifications, advanced monitoring, and maintenance-free LED technology to deliver dependable emergency egress lighting in hazardous and explosive atmospheres worldwide.
