Elevated LED Runway Threshold Light with Low Energy Consumption and Long MTBF

The RELIANCE Runway Threshold Elevated LED Light, designated L-862(L), is a unidirectional elevated lighting fixture specifically designed for runway threshold applications where green lighting is required. These RELIANCE LED fixtures can be equipped with the IQ built-in Individual Lamp Control and Monitoring System (ILCMS), providing an intelligent platform essential for modern airfield lighting management.

This fixture complies with a comprehensive range of international and national standards, ensuring its suitability for global airport operations. It meets FAA requirements under AC 150/5345-46 and Engineering Brief No. 67, ICAO Annex 14 Volume I, EASA CS-ADR-DSN regulations, U.S. Military UFC 3-535-01 standards (section 3-1.4), NATO STANAG 3316, and additional certifications from Canada’s TP 312, among others. Such broad compliance assures consistent performance, reliability, and regulatory alignment across diverse operating environments.

The RELIANCE Runway Threshold Elevated LED light serves a variety of critical airfield uses as outlined by ICAO, including approach centerline and cross bar lighting, approach siderow, runway threshold and threshold wing bar, runway end, and stop bar applications. Specifically, it supports FAA-designated functions such as Stop Bar L-862S(L), Runway Threshold L-862E(L), and Runway End L-862E(L).

Available in three versions, these fixtures offer flexibility to meet specific operational needs. The IQ version incorporates integrated ILCMS intelligence for advanced monitoring and control. A monitored version features integrated fail-open technology to maintain circuit integrity in case of lamp failure, while the non-monitored version operates without any monitoring functionality.

In terms of efficiency, the RELIANCE elevated light is high-intensity yet energy efficient, consuming less than 50 watts with a power factor of 0.95, significantly lower than traditional incandescent fixtures that typically require 150 to 200 watts. The design allows installation on the same mounting devices used for most elevated halogen lights, enabling straightforward retrofit replacements. The light’s leveling and azimuth aiming are simplified through a dedicated aiming device, with two opposite screws providing stable and precise positioning. The fixture is fully dimmable and respects the dimming response curve of traditional halogen lights. For further optimization, the IQ 2A functionality integrates with RELIANCE Intelligent Lighting systems, enabling additional power savings and individual intensity control.

From a sustainability perspective, the RELIANCE LED light offers an impressive mean time between failures (MTBF) of 56,000 hours at full intensity and over 200,000 hours under typical operating conditions, greatly reducing maintenance demands and relamping expenses. Its low-profile, compact size allows it to withstand even the heaviest jet blast, making it ideal for installation at runway thresholds or ends. Transitioning from quartz-incandescent to LED fixtures with RELIANCE allows airports to add more lighting without necessitating increased constant current regulator (CCR) sizes, reducing the need for additional support equipment like isolation transformers. The LED source also eliminates the need for filter replacements and avoids color shifts under varying viewing angles or CCR step settings. The fixture’s IP67-rated design ensures robust protection against water, dust, and insect ingress, further enhancing durability.

Safety features include rugged lightning protection that complies with ANSI/IEEE C62.41-1991 Location Category C2 standards as referenced by FAA Engineering Brief 67. This rating defines a severe electrical surge environment characterized by a 1.2/50 microsecond and 8/20 microsecond combination wave, withstanding peak voltages of 10,000 volts and peak currents of 5,000 amps. Optionally, the LED lights can include an internal monitoring function where, upon detecting a defect, the light automatically disconnects from the secondary side of the isolation transformer, creating an open circuit condition. This feature enables external lamp fault detection devices integrated within Constant Current Regulators and ILCMS platforms to effectively monitor lamp status and failures.

Regarding power supply compatibility, RELIANCE lights are designed to operate with any IEC- or FAA-compliant transformers rated up to 150 watts. Detailed guidelines for calculating actual circuit volt-ampere (VA) loads are available in the user manual, ensuring proper integration and reliable performance within existing airfield electrical infrastructure.
