Digital Ceiling Mount Occupancy Sensor with PIR and Acoustic Dual Technology for Commercial Lighting Control Applications

The SENSORWORX digital ceiling mount occupancy sensors combine precision detection with simple installation, making them a reliable solution for both small and large spaces. With flexible mounting options and multiple digital pairing methods, these sensors significantly reduce contractor labor and setup time. They can be integrated with other SENSORWORX ceiling, corner, or hallway sensors to achieve seamless coverage across irregular or large areas. Built and manufactured in the USA, the SENSORWORX digital occupancy sensors are part of a comprehensive ecosystem of intelligent lighting control devices.

These digital sensors communicate through a topology-free, three-wire data line, eliminating the complexities and reliability issues often associated with CAT-5-based systems. Using standard 18/3 cable and simple wire nuts, installation is fast and straightforward. Each sensor is individually addressable and can be digitally grouped with load controllers and wall stations through three configuration options: the default single-zone setup for immediate use, a push-button pairing sequence for multi-zone applications, or advanced configuration through the SENSORWORX mobile app when used with an SWD-940 Advanced Load Controller. Once paired, each digital control zone can be fine-tuned for a variety of operational modes, dimming preferences, and photocell functions, enabling highly customized lighting environments.

Employing the latest passive infrared (PIR) sensing technology and refined signal processing, SENSORWORX sensors deliver superior occupant detection accuracy. Select models include an integrated microphone, which introduces passive acoustic detection to enhance coverage in areas with limited motion or visual obstructions. For applications requiring light-level control, optional integrated photocells allow daylight harvesting or on/off light regulation.

The core operation of each SENSORWORX sensor centers on detecting subtle changes in infrared energy produced by human presence and movement. Once occupancy is detected, the sensor signals its paired load controller to switch on or brighten the lights. In models equipped with dual technology (PIR and acoustic), the built-in microphone activates to sustain detection accuracy while the lights remain on. At routine intervals, the sensor retransmits its status to keep lights on during brief inactivity and return them to off or dim states once a space becomes vacant—maximizing both comfort and energy efficiency.

For smaller spaces such as private offices, copy rooms, or restrooms, a single sensor paired with a digital load controller like the SWD-900 or SWD-940 is typically sufficient. If needed, multiple sensors can be paired together for increased sensitivity. Additional wall stations can be paired to allow control from multiple locations, enabling either occupancy (auto-on) or vacancy (manual-on) modes to comply with modern energy codes. Dual technology sensors are especially beneficial in confined or obstructed areas such as bathrooms or spaces where occupants are seated for extended periods.

In larger environments such as classrooms, conference rooms, open offices, and hallways, multiple sensors can be linked to one or more load controllers to provide consistent coverage. Multiple switching or dimming points can be added by pairing the system with digital wall stations or zone controllers. In workspaces with furniture partitions, cubicles, or architectural barriers, dual technology models help maintain detection reliability.

Models with integrated photocells introduce daylight-responsive control capabilities. Depending on the application, the photocell can be configured in several operational modes at the paired load controller. The daylight harvesting mode gradually dims lights to maintain the desired brightness while utilizing natural light. The on/off photocell control is ideal for public areas such as corridors and entryways, turning lights completely off when daylight exceeds a set threshold. The inhibit-only mode keeps lights off if sufficient daylight is available upon occupancy detection, activating them only if light levels fall below the defined threshold.

Compact and sleek, SENSORWORX ceiling sensors have a 4-inch diameter and a low 1.25-inch height, making them visually unobtrusive. Available in matte white or black finishes, they include LED indicators for motion detection, pairing, and communication errors. The sensors operate on 15 VDC power and have very low current draw, typically between 8 mA and 9.5 mA depending on model and options. Installation uses a simple three-wire connection for power, common, and data, with up to 1,000 feet of point-to-point length and a 4,000-foot total bus limit. All communications are digitally encrypted for secure system integration.

Various time delay options—ranging from one minute to several hours—are configured at the load controller, allowing flexibility in occupancy timing and room usage. The sensor’s built-in test modes enable quick verification of coverage and function. These sensors meet ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and Title 24 energy code requirements, ensuring compliance in commercial and institutional installations.

SENSORWORX offers several PIR lens configurations to suit different applications. The small motion 360° lens detects minor movements—such as hand gestures—in small offices, covering approximately 500 square feet. The large motion 360° lens expands coverage to roughly 2,000 square feet, ideal for detecting walking motion in open spaces. For high ceilings up to 40 feet, the high bay 360° lens provides reliable detection for gyms, warehouses, and other tall environments. Dual technology models (PIR and acoustic) overlap microphone and infrared sensing fields, ensuring responsiveness even when movement is minimal. After a programmed timeout, the acoustic detection remains active briefly, allowing lights to reactivate via voice or sound—an added layer of convenience and safety.

Altogether, SENSORWORX digital ceiling mount occupancy sensors combine precise sensing performance, flexible digital control, secure communications, and contractor-friendly installation—making them a comprehensive solution for modern lighting control in both small and large spaces.
