The MDW series patient room headwall light is a specification-grade LED fixture designed specifically for modern healthcare environments, offering a balance of performance, hygiene, and visual comfort. Engineered for use in hospitals, nursing homes, and chronic care facilities, this headwall light features a sleek, low-profile design that extends less than seven inches from the wall, creating a clean and contemporary aesthetic suitable for any patient room. Its smooth, contoured surfaces and hygienic housing are crafted to minimize dust accumulation and simplify cleaning, supporting strict infection control requirements.
The MDW series delivers three distinct lighting functions—exam, ambient, and night observation modes—ensuring that both patients and medical staff benefit from optimized visibility and comfort. The optical system is specifically designed to reduce glare while providing precise, task-oriented lighting for examinations and general room lighting for patient well-being. Each aperture can be specified with its own independent color temperature and color rendering index, allowing separate control of the ambient uplight and exam downlight for customized performance. Dimming capabilities for each mode add flexibility for a range of clinical and comfort-focused lighting needs.
This series is available in 2-foot, 3-foot, and 4-foot lengths, providing lumen outputs from 2,500 to 6,500 lumens and up to 13,000 lumens in high-output configurations. Optional night observation lighting can be configured in low-lumen white or amber tones, providing caregivers with visibility for overnight tasks without disturbing patients. For control integration, the MDW offers optional low-voltage controllers compatible with pillow switches or nurse call systems, as well as simple pull-chain controls for sequential operation across four lighting modes.
The fixture’s housing is constructed from extruded aluminum with a concealed, reinforced heavy-gauge steel mounting bracket that ensures robust wall attachment and alignment. Tight-fitting die-cast aluminum end caps and hidden hardware contribute to a clean, professional appearance while maintaining easy serviceability. The extruded high-impact diffuse acrylic lens features a smooth outer surface and internal optical ribs, secured flush to the housing and endcaps to promote effortless cleaning and consistent light diffusion.
The MDW incorporates high-efficiency LED board modules designed for long-lasting, consistent light output with precise color rendering. Available in 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K color temperatures with standard 80+ CRI or optional 90+ CRI, these LED modules maintain a color consistency of 3 SDCM and achieve a lifetime performance of L90 greater than 60,000 hours. The modules are field-replaceable and commercially available, meeting Zhaga™ Book 7 standards for ongoing component compatibility.
Power is provided through a constant-current electronic driver that is fully programmable and dimmable down to 1% using a 0–10V protocol, ensuring smooth operation and efficiency exceeding 85%. The driver maintains a total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 10% and operates on 120–277V or 347V, 50/60Hz input. Optional drivers compatible with Lutron™ or DALI control systems are also available. Internal emergency drivers are accessible from the room side for easy servicing.
For control and user interaction, optional low-voltage controllers support pillow switch operation, available in on/off or dimmable configurations. Pull-chain switches may also be specified and mounted on either side of the fixture, with antimicrobial tethers available to support hygienic handling. The fixture mounts securely to a rigid galvanized steel plate that includes vertical and horizontal slots for precise adjustment and leveling. Reinforced ribs add strength and prevent displacement over time, ensuring a stable and secure installation.
All visible exterior surfaces are finished in antimicrobial matte white polyester powder coating, applied following a five-stage pretreatment process for durability and hygiene. The finish is rated for 1,000-hour salt spray resistance, ensuring long-term performance even in demanding healthcare environments. Gloss white antimicrobial finishes are also available upon request. Constructed from 100% recyclable materials—with over 60% derived from previously recycled content—the MDW series demonstrates a commitment to sustainability alongside performance.
Certified to ETL standards for damp locations in both the U.S. and Canada, the MDW series meets the rigorous demands of medical environments, providing hospitals and healthcare facilities with a reliable, hygienic, and patient-centered lighting solution.
