The MD2 Series is a specification-grade, enclosed LED ambient and exam light designed to deliver balanced vertical lighting performance and a refined architectural appearance in healthcare environments. Its linear slot design creates an elegant visual aesthetic while providing both exam and ambient outputs when installed in pairs, offering versatile functionality for patient rooms and clinical settings. The fixture’s integrated optical systems ensure consistent, comfortable lighting suitable for both medical tasks and general illumination. Available in an 8” x 48” configuration, the MD2 Series is typically installed in pairs to support multiple light levels, enabling adaptable lighting conditions for patient comfort and staff efficiency.
To enhance functionality, the MD2 Series offers an optional integrated low-voltage controller housed within the primary fixture. This intelligent control system simplifies installation by allowing the main luminaire to directly manage a satellite fixture, resulting in a single, streamlined connection to building and bed control wiring. This setup reduces complexity while maintaining robust control over light modes. Additionally, the fixture can be equipped with amber or white night light options, providing caregivers with low-level lighting for nighttime observations or procedures without disturbing patient rest.
Constructed for long-term durability, the MD2 Series features precision-formed 20-gauge cold rolled steel housing with welded construction and integral flanges for grid ceiling interface. The door frame is also fabricated from 20-gauge cold rolled steel, formed as a seamless one-piece assembly with welded corners and flush countersunk stainless steel screws, optionally available in color-matched white. The frame is securely hinged to the housing using dual stainless steel safety cable tethers for safe, easy access during maintenance.
The optical design of the MD2 Series includes a high-hiding diffuse frost acrylic lens that provides smooth, glare-free light distribution. The lens, 0.080” thick, is sealed to the inner surface of the door to maintain optical integrity and is also available in durable polycarbonate for additional impact resistance. The ambient mode delivers uniform symmetric distribution through a centered LED array, while the exam mode employs a die-formed reflector and strategic LED arrangement to create distinct left and right asymmetric distributions—perfect for medical tasks that require precise directional light control.
Inside, the LED modules are engineered for high efficiency and tight quality control to ensure superior CRI, color consistency, and lumen performance over time. Available color temperatures include 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K, with a standard 80 CRI and optional 90 CRI for enhanced color rendering. The Tunable White option allows dynamic adjustment from 2700K to 6500K, supporting human-centric lighting strategies. The LED modules have a rated lifetime exceeding 60,000 hours at L70, are field-replaceable, and are commercially available for long-term serviceability. BIOS® SkyBlue® technology is also available, offering circadian-supportive lighting that aligns with natural biological rhythms to promote patient health and recovery.
The MD2 Series incorporates a constant current electronic driver that is programmable and dimmable to 1% using a 0–10V protocol. The driver delivers more than 85% efficiency with less than 10% total harmonic distortion (THD) and meets FCC Part 15, Class A standards. The fixture operates on 120–277VAC or 347VAC, 50/60Hz power systems and offers compatibility with Lutron™ and DALI dimming controls upon request. An optional low-voltage controller is available for pillow switch operation, providing convenient patient control of the light (pillow switch supplied by others).
A matte architectural white polyester powder coat finish enhances the fixture’s clean appearance and durability. The finish undergoes a five-stage pretreatment process to ensure superior adhesion and corrosion resistance, with an optional anti-microbial coating (F36) available for infection-sensitive areas. Reflectors are coated in high-reflectance white polyester powder to maximize light output and efficiency.
For mounting, the MD2 Series integrates a T-grid clip system with seismic support holes for secure installation in suspended ceilings. Optional yoke mounting brackets are also available for flanged or drywall ceiling applications, ensuring flexibility across different room types.
Built to meet the demanding requirements of medical and healthcare environments, the MD2 Series is certified to CSA and UL standards and ETL listed for damp locations. IP65 construction is available as an option for environments requiring sealed protection against dust and moisture. The fixture’s specification-grade design, combined with versatile control options, durable construction, and refined optical performance, makes the MD2 Series an ideal solution for hospitals, chronic care facilities, and patient rooms requiring both exam-grade precision and ambient visual comfort.
