The Certolux MBH1i Series is a behavioral health recessed plenum access LED troffer designed to deliver safety, durability, and visual comfort in challenging healthcare environments. Purpose-built for hospitals, nursing homes, behavioral health facilities, and patient rooms, the MBH1i provides secure, tamper-resistant lighting while maintaining a calm, non-clinical aesthetic. This recessed fixture allows access above the ceiling through the fixture itself, streamlining maintenance while ensuring a sealed, ligature-resistant design. Engineered for flanged drywall or security ceiling installations, the MBH1i is not suitable for T-bar grid ceilings. Its robust construction, ligature-resistant features, and clean architectural form make it an ideal choice for high-risk environments where safety and performance must coexist.
The MBH1i Series is available in 2x2 and 2x4 sizes, delivering lumen packages from 3000 to 4500 lumens with 80+ or optional 90+ CRI for accurate color rendering in healthcare settings. It offers a range of color temperatures from 3000K to 5000K, as well as Tunable White (2700K–6500K) and BIOS® SkyBlue® options that support circadian lighting goals and patient well-being. Built to CSA and UL standards, this luminaire is rated for wet locations, certified IP65 for dust and water resistance, and tested to exceed IK10 impact protection, ensuring resilience against intentional or accidental abuse.
At the core of the MBH1i is SHIELDCare™, Certolux’s patented ligature-resistant inset door frame technology designed specifically for behavioral health environments. The one-piece inset door seals directly to the housing, providing superior protection against tampering and ensuring that all components remain secure. The access door allows convenient entry to the plenum space from below and is supported by internal fasteners and stainless steel aircraft cables. Its 16-gauge cold rolled steel frame features Torx™ tamper-resistant fasteners with silicone o-rings, while a closed-cell gasket ensures the frame is sealed against dust, moisture, and light leaks.
The fixture’s housing is precision-formed and seam-welded from 20-gauge cold rolled steel, with a rigid 18-gauge flange featuring rounded welded corners for safety. It undergoes a five-stage pretreatment process and is finished with a gloss white polyester powder coat, tested to ASTM B117 1000-hour salt spray standards for long-term corrosion resistance. Optional housing materials include stainless steel or aluminum, providing flexibility for demanding environments.
The lens assembly combines a 0.250-inch thick clear polycarbonate outer lens with an optional contoured diffuse inner lens for balanced, comfortable light distribution. Both surfaces are smooth and easy to clean, meeting hygiene standards essential in medical settings. The lens is secured by a continuous retention bracket and sealed to the door frame using RTV silicone, ensuring a robust, tamper-proof construction suitable for behavioral health applications.
The LED system uses high-efficiency board modules precisely regulated for consistent CRI, color temperature, and lumen output. Users can select from multiple CCT options (3000K, 3500K, 4000K, or 5000K) with 3-step MacAdam color consistency. Tunable White, BIOS® SkyBlue®, and optional amber or red LED arrays are available for specialized lighting needs. All modules are field-replaceable, offering long-term serviceability, and deliver a rated lifetime L70 > 60,000 hours, minimizing maintenance in continuous-use facilities.
The electrical system features a constant current programmable driver with 0–10V dimming to 1%, ensuring smooth, flicker-free performance. The driver maintains high efficiency (>85%) and low total harmonic distortion (<10%), and complies with FCC Part 15 Class A. The fixture operates on 120–277V or 347V AC, 50/60Hz, and offers Lutron™ or DALI driver options for advanced control integration. Emergency drivers are accessible from the room side for easy servicing, further enhancing maintainability in secure environments.
The finish is a durable, antimicrobial gloss white polyester powder coat, applied after a rigorous five-stage pretreatment. Alternative finishes include matte white, anti-microbial coatings, or stainless steel brushed #4 polished surfaces, providing aesthetic flexibility and hygiene protection.
The MBH1i is designed for flanged ceiling installations, supported by swing-style mounting brackets with an adjustable vertical range of 1.3 to 2.9 inches. Its construction is suitable for recessed IC-rated ceilings and can operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -4°F (-20°C) to 104°F (40°C).
The fixture meets a full suite of certifications and listings, including UL and CSA for wet locations (CAN & USA, ANSI/UL1598, UL8750), IP65 dust and water ingress protection, and IK10 impact resistance. Cleanroom-quality sealing and ligature-resistant design make it ideal for use in behavioral health wards, psychiatric care facilities, and secure medical environments where safety, longevity, and performance are paramount.
