BIOS SkyBlue™ Biological Tunable Circadian Lighting is a dynamic, human-centric lighting solution developed to support occupants in 24-hour operational environments where biological light cues are vital but sleep does not occur. Ideal for spaces active before 7 a.m., after 7 p.m., or throughout the night, SkyBlue Tunable ensures continuous circadian support by adjusting spectral content according to the time of day. During daytime hours, the system emits a biologically optimized high-melanopic spectrum with a precise 490nm “sky blue” wavelength to promote alertness, focus, and cognitive function. As evening approaches, the light smoothly transitions to a low-melanopic 2700K spectrum that minimizes circadian disruption while maintaining comfortable visual conditions.

This tunable system provides true biological modulation rather than aesthetic color changes, ensuring scientifically effective circadian regulation across all phases of the day. Unlike decorative or mood-based lighting, which alters color temperature for ambiance, BIOS Tunable Lighting directly targets non-visual photoreceptors in the human eye, supporting physiological and psychological balance. The adaptive spectral tuning allows facilities that operate around the clock—such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, offices, higher education spaces, shift-work environments, hospitality settings, and residences—to sustain daytime alertness and nighttime relaxation through biologically aligned light cues.

SkyBlue Tunable Light Engines are available in three daytime correlated color temperature (CCT) options—3000K, 3500K, and 4000K—each designed to dim smoothly to a 2700K low-melanopic spectrum for evening use. This flexibility ensures compatibility across multiple architectural and design requirements, allowing specifiers to tailor circadian lighting strategies for diverse applications such as senior living environments, sports facilities, and hospitality spaces. BIOS also offers SkyBlue technology in multiple LED formats, including linear arrays, tape light, and chip-on-board (COB) modules, allowing seamless integration into various fixture types.

The BIOS Tunable system can operate using either single-channel or two-channel control, depending on project needs. In two-channel configurations, intensity and spectrum are controlled independently using standard two-channel LED drivers and common dimming protocols such as 0–10V, DMX, Wireless, DALI, ELV, or Lutron. This approach allows precise adjustment of both brightness and spectral composition throughout the day. In single-channel configurations, the system is paired with the BIOS Bio-Dimming™ Module, which enables the intensity and spectrum to be managed together on one control channel. By dimming the light in the evening, the Bio-Dimming™ Module gradually reduces the 490nm SkyBlue component, transitioning seamlessly from biologically stimulating daytime light to a restful evening mode without sacrificing lumen output or visual comfort.

The Tunable Bio-Dimming™ function ensures a natural and intuitive lighting experience, allowing users to enjoy continuous biological and psychological benefits without complex controls. The transition begins with the reduction of the 490nm wavelength, followed by a gradual shift from the daytime CCT (3000K, 3500K, or 4000K) to a low-melanopic 2700K evening spectrum. Throughout this transition, the light output remains stable and visually consistent, preserving both functionality and circadian alignment.

The BIOS SkyBlue Tunable LED light engines are scientifically calibrated for precise circadian efficacy. The 3500K source delivers a blue spectrum peak at 490nm with a daytime melanopic ratio (m-EER) of at least 0.80 or (m-DER) of at least 0.72, along with a CRI above 80 and R9 greater than 90. When shifted to the 2700K evening spectrum, the melanopic ratio decreases to a maximum m-EER of 0.47 or m-DER of 0.42, supporting evening relaxation while maintaining excellent color quality. Similarly, the 4000K source achieves a higher daytime melanopic ratio—at least 0.90 m-EER or 0.81 m-DER—before transitioning to the same 2700K low-melanopic state at night.
