Battery-Powered Wireless Occupancy Sensor with PIR Motion Sensing and Compact Ceiling or Wall Mount Design

The wireless wide view and hallway occupancy sensors are an intuitive and dependable battery-powered control solution tailored for modern lighting control applications. These sensors are highly regarded by contractors for their flexible installation options and exceptional ease of setup, which greatly minimize overall installation time and simplify the wireless pairing process. Each sensor can be linked to one or more wireless load controllers—such as wall switches or power packs—within just a few seconds. Once connected, the sensors can operate individually or in conjunction with other wireless or wired ceiling, corner, or hallway sensors to extend coverage across larger or irregularly shaped areas. Utilizing the latest passive infrared (PIR) sensing technology and advanced digital signal processing, these sensors deliver precise motion detection and effective energy management in a wide variety of environments.

In typical operation, the sensors detect changes in infrared energy emitted by occupants as they move within the coverage zone. Upon sensing occupancy, the device immediately transmits a wireless signal to the linked load controller, which responds by switching lights on or adjusting brightness accordingly. The sensors continually update their occupancy status, allowing the load controller to maintain illumination during brief periods of inactivity. Once the area is unoccupied, the controller reverts lighting to an energy-saving dimmed or off state. This intelligent communication process ensures consistent performance and energy conservation without the need for wired connections.

A single wide view sensor is ideal for medium-sized environments such as classrooms, meeting rooms, or break rooms. For larger areas like open-plan offices or lecture halls, multiple sensors can be wirelessly linked to the same load controller to achieve complete coverage. The hallway model is specifically designed for extended, narrow spaces, offering optimal detection from one or both ends of a corridor. When combined with compatible wall switch controllers or power packs, these sensors also help meet ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and Title 24 energy code requirements that specify vacancy or occupancy-based operation modes.

The sensors employ PIR detection technology and are available in both wide view and long-range hallway configurations. Their compact form factor, matte white finish, and five mounting options make them versatile and easy to install. Mounting accessories include a nipple attachment with an integrated hole saw, enabling quick setup on ceilings or walls. A convenient test mode assists installers in verifying motion detection and wireless linking during setup. LED indicators provide clear visual feedback for motion detection, wireless pairing, and coverage testing.

Each unit operates using a single CR123(A) lithium battery, capable of lasting up to ten years under default conditions. The sensor’s non-volatile memory retains all programmed settings even when the battery is removed or fully depleted, and a low-battery alert triggers a brief lighting blink sequence to signal replacement. With a wireless range of up to 80 feet line-of-sight or 40 feet through walls and floors, these sensors use the 915 MHz ISM band for reliable, interference-resistant communication. All transmitted data is securely encrypted to prevent unauthorized access.

The sensors support both occupancy and vacancy modes, configurable through linked controllers such as the SWX-851 wall switch or the SWX-950 series power packs. Multiple time delay options ranging from 1 to 30 minutes can be set at the controller level to match specific application needs. The wireless linking process is simple and quick, requiring only a three-second push-button sequence. Coverage testing is equally straightforward, with a white LED indicator that illuminates upon detecting motion.

Physically, each sensor measures approximately 2.875 inches high, 2.75 inches wide, and 3.25 inches deep, weighing about 4.75 ounces. It operates in indoor environments with ambient temperatures between 32°F and 122°F (0°C to 50°C) and relative humidity up to 95% non-condensing. The sensor is RoHS compliant, reflecting environmentally responsible construction standards. The wide view model provides a 120° coverage angle, detecting small motions such as hand movements up to 40 feet and larger motions such as walking up to 70 feet when mounted between 8 and 12 feet high.

Combining simple installation, robust performance, and long-term reliability, these wireless occupancy sensors are an excellent solution for intelligent lighting control in classrooms, conference rooms, offices, and hallways. They provide seamless wireless integration, long battery life, secure communication, and effortless code compliance—all within a compact and aesthetically refined design.
