Grazing is a technique used to bring out the textured beauty of an interior or exterior vertical surface or architectural element. Grazing enhances a wall by placing the light fixture closer to the wall and aiming the beam upward or downward. How close the light fixture should be to the wall will depend on the desired grazing effect. Grazing light creates a heightened play of shadows and texture of a stone or brick wall, privacy fence, tree trunk, chimney, or climbing ivy. The grazing technique is also used to minimize reflections in specular surfaces, such as etched glass, polished stone, wood, or metal. Wall-grazing is similar to wall-washing, except that it is used to create interesting shadows on walls and make a textured wall pop, while wall washing is used to achieve an even washing effect thereby hiding imperfections in a wall and flattening texture.
