Side marker lights are mounted as near as practical at the front and rear on both sides of a vehicle to define the overall length of the vehicle. Forward side marker lights should be an amber color. Rearward side marker lights emit red light. Intermediate side marker lights in an amber color should be mounted on the side of the vehicle at or near the midpoint between the forward and the rearward side marker lights on all passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles (MPV), trucks, buses, and trailers that are 30 feet or longer.

Side marker lights should be mounted not less than 15″ but no more than 60″ above road surface measured from center of item on vehicle. They must be capable of being visible and distinguished under normal atmospheric conditions from a distance of at least of five hundred (500) feet. Side marker lights should be steady burning in use (except being flashed for signaling purposes) and turned on when the headlights are activated in a steady burning state or the parking lamps installed on passenger cars, MPVs, trucks, and buses with an overall width of less than 80 inches are activated. Side marker lights may be mounted in combination with clearance lights.

Clearance lights are also mounted on the front and rear of a vehicle to indicate the overall width and height of the vehicle. These lights are required on all passenger cars, MPV, trucks, buses, and trailers that have a minimal length of 30 feet. The front clearance light should emit amber light. The clearance light on the rear should display a red color.
